Pentagon's Prompt Global Strike Program: A Trigger for Nuclear Conflict? (Analysis)
The Pentagon’s Prompt Global Strike (PGS) program aims to enable the United States to plan and deliver military strikes anywhere on the globe in less than one hour. However, weapon systems developed in pursuit of a PGS capability could raise the probability of an inadvertent nuclear exchange and complicate future arms control negotiations. Therefore, as CDI Research Assistant Vince Manzo explains in this analysis, it is imperative that Congress exercise strict oversight over all aspects of any PGS program.

The Impending Threat of Spiral Development (Analysis)
The Pentagon's method of developing missile defense, known as spiral development, has resulted in a behemoth of a weapons system that is held to no firm development benchmarks, has complete freedom of action in setting its own priorities and has no end in sight to its cost increases. Unfortunately, the Pentagon is working to establish spiral development as the go-to model for weapons development, which could compromise U.S. national security. UN Holds Small Arms Conference: United States is Absent (Analysis)
Countries from around the world will meet at the United Nations in New York from July 14-18 for the Biennial Meeting of States (BMS) to “consider” implementation of the UN Programme of Action on Small Arms (PoA) – a politically binding agreement outlining state responsibility at the national, regional and global levels to curb the proliferation and misuse of small arms. Should FCS Be Next? (Analysis)
When Secretary of Defense Robert Gates demanded the resignations of the secretary and chief of staff of the Air Force, some of the media coverage noted that one of the many reasons was the Air Force's persistence in advocating still more F-22 aircraft purchases, despite the Raptor's complete irrelevance, and non-appearance, in the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. Secretary Gates has also questioned the relevance of the Army's extraordinarily costly and complex Future Combat System (FCS).
