GEAN - Genetic Engineering Action Network: Home What is the Genetic Engineering Action Network? GEAN is a network of almost 100 organizations from across the US working to resist genetic engineering in agriculture. GEAN's affiliate groups range from large national non-profits, including the Center for Food Safety and Friends of the Earth, to state and regional groups like Californians for GE-Free Agriculture and GMO-Free Hawaii, to small grassroots groups, like Colorado GEAN and GE-Free Maine. Our affiliates work on a wide variety of issues including passing town- and county-level restrictions on GMOs, stopping the introduction of new genetically engineered crops, and advocating for tighter national and international standards on GMOs. GEAN provides our affiliate groups with a wide range of support. We run a large listserve that connects activists from across the US, organize national and regional conferences for genetic engineering activists, and provide materials, strategy advice, media support, and trainings for emerging grassroots campaigns. Therefore, the mandatory, clear, accurate, complete labeling of all products, whether foreign or domestic, derived from, processed with, produced by, containing or consisting of GE organisms should be required. We need a publicly enforced and fully transparent government system to assess the socioeconomic, environmental and human health impacts of genetic engineering that conforms to rigorous scientific standards, requires a demonstration of a reasonable certainty of no harm, shifts the burden of proof and cost to the manufacturer and permanently codifies the Precautionary Principle. We must protect family farmers, workers, consumers and the environment by ending all monopoly practices of corporate agribusiness by enforcing anti-trust and market concentration laws, banning patents of seeds, plants, animals, and terminator type technologies, and renewing public interest agricultural research. Any entity, excluding family farmers, engaging in research, development or manufacturing of genetically engineered or modified products must assume all liability for harm to health and the environment including, but not limited to: the transfer of GE traits, transgenic drift, destruction of wildlife and habitat and the short and long term effects on human health and the environment GEAN - USA is a national network of grassroots activist, public interest and farm advocacy organizations working to expose and stop agricultural biotechnology and genetically engineered foods |
