ShenZhou 7 Human Spaceflight Mission
 space="4" vspace="4" border="0" align="right" />28/09/2008 - ShenZhou 7 is the first flight mission in the second phase of the China Human Spaceflight Programme (Project 921), and the third human spaceflight ever carried out by China. Despite being almost a year later than originally scheduled, the completion of the flight mission has been a major achievement for China’s space programme. The principle goal of the mission, to carry out China’s first extravehicular activity (EVA) mission, was accomplished without major problems. This made China the third country after Russia and the United States, capable of carrying out EVA operations. FULL STORY

New Frigate at Huangpu Shipyard
 space="4" vspace="4" border="0" align="right" />21/09/2008 - A new missile frigate has been identified under construction at the Huangpu Shipyard in Guangzhou, Guangdong Province. The vessel is thought to be a follow-up of the Type 054A (Jiangkai-II class) and may be designated Type 054B (Jiangkai-III class?). The vessel, currently in the dockyard of the Huangpu Shipyard, is expected to be completed in late 2009. At the moment it is not known how the new vessel differs to previous designs of the same class, but some improvements in sensor and possibly weapon system are expected. FULL STORY

Tianwan Nuclear Power Station Fire
 space="4" vspace="4" border="0" align="right" />20/09/2008 - A fire has broken out at the Tianwan nuclear power station in Lianyungang, Jiangsu Province on 26 August 2008, forcing the No.1 reactor to shut down. The Chinese authority confirmed that all safety systems worked correctly and there was no radioactive leakage detected. The two reactors at the Tianwan nuclear power station are the largest nuclear reactors ever built in China. The two Russian-built VVER-91 pressurised water reactors each has outputs of 1,060MW. The fire took place only 15 months after the power station began commercial operations. The incident came just weeks before the Beijing Olympic Games and was not reported until the late September, almost a month after it took place. It is not known whether the reactor has resumed operations. FULL STORY
