Send an email to mri-info-subscribe@yahoogroups.com or write us at migrantsrightsinternational@gmail.com Activity: On March 19, 2008, MRI, in conjunction with the International Catholic Migration Commission (ICMC) and FORUM-Asia, organized the event "The Road to Manila 2008: An International Briefing and Strategy Meeting for Civil Society Mobilizations and GFMD Parallel Events on Migrants Rights". Close to 50 people participated in both parts of the event that was held in the United Nations. Part I was an international briefing, and Part II was a civil society strategy meeting. Civil society from Asia, Europe, Latin America and Africa attended both events; in addition, officials from UN agencies and government missions attended the briefing. The civil society groups that participated represented a variety of civil society groups including migrants associations, trade unions, domestic workers unions and groups, national networks, as well as human rights, religious and advocacy organizations. In the civil society strategy meeting, there was broad agreement on the necessity for deeper civil society engagement in GFMD, and a commitment to further discuss and engage in joint strategies. Activity: On March 18, 2008, Migrants Rights International, in conjunction with the Korean Confederation of Trade Unions and FORUM-Asia organized the panel discussion in the United Nations entitled "Rising Repression against Migrants around the World: A side event to the 7th UN Human Rights Council Session”. Speakers were Alex Ong of Migrant Care (Malaysia/Indonesia); Catherine Tactaquin, MRI / National Network for Immigrant and Refugee Rights – NNIRR (USA); Mamadou Goïta , Institut de Recherche et de Promotion de Alternatives en Développement – IRPAD (Mali); Sophie de Rivaz, Collectif de soutien aux sans-papiers de Genève ( Switzerland ); Wol-san Liem, Korean Confederation of Trade Unions – KCTU (South Korea); and Yenny Hurtado of the National Domestic Workers Union of of Colombia (SINTRASEDOM). Ambassador Luis Alfonso de Alba (Mexico) was a special commentator; the event was facilitated by Naomi Onaga, MRI International Coordinator, and William Gois, regional coordinator of Migrant Forum in Asia and chair of the international steering committee. Activity: National Conference for Immigrant and Refugee Rights sponsored by the National Network for Immigrant and Refugee Rights (NNIRR) was held January 18 – 20, 2008 in Houston, Texas, United States. The conference brought together over 600 community leaders, immigrant rights activists, organizers, advocates and allies to strategize on directions and priorities for immigrant rights.
