| About Welfare Rights Organizing Coalition (WROC) About Welfare Rights Organizing Coalition (WROC) Who Is WROC? WROC is made up of families who currently receive Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) and families who have left TANF for low wage jobs and receive Subsidies for child care, medical coverage or food stamps. WROC organizes groups of women and men to watch how welfare and family policy is implemented at their local welfare office and how it is made at the legislature and at DSHS in Olympia. WROC staff include: Jean Colman, Director, Monica Peabody, Organizer in Southwest Washington, Vivian Horn, Advocate and Seattle Organizer, Joyce Yee, Community Organizer, Doris Nelson, Office Manager. They are currently recruiting for a VISTA Organizer in Yakima and a Seattle based Organizer for King and Kitsap Counties. WROC is a member of the Women's Funding Alliance, through which they participate in workplace giving campaigns. Nationally, they are a member of the Western Region Welfare Activist Network, the National Campaign for Jobs & Income Support and the GrassRoots Working for Welfare Leadership. What They Do WROC organizes welfare rights clinics for parents who use a particular community service. They are currently organizing in King, Kitsap, Thurston, Lewis, and Mason Counties and hope to start organizing in the Yakima area as soon as they hire an Organizer. If you are interested in forming clinics in your area, please call the WROC office. Below are some of the services WROC offers: Referrals to volunteer legal advocates to assist recipients in fair hearings Assistance in starting and maintaining welfare rights clinics Assistance in starting and maintaining local welfare rights groups Training on how to talk to your legislators concerning welfare issues Leadership development Current and accurate information on changes in the welfare system Information and referral to Community Resources WROC Newsletter with useful information on related low income issues. Volunteer opportunities WROC's Mission The mission of the Welfare Rights Organizing Coalition is to effect economic and social justice by educating and empowering low income parents. WROC is made up of individuals and groups whose purpose is to empower people receiving public assistance to make positive changes in the welfare system. WROC's goal is to change the welfare system so that it is more responsive to the needs of low income people and treats public assistance recipients fairly and with dignity. By seeing the changes they can make in the welfare system, WROC encourages its members to use those same skills to make positive decisions in their own lives. |
