Fall 2008
Here at SHS a new academic year has begun —one that will hold some shifts and new opportunities for us. For the first time in the 2008-2009 academic year, the majority of our students will be distance students. While we do expect more on-campus students next year, the current group is taking their Swedenborgian coursework via online courses and tutorials. We are happy that we will have an expected total of ten ordination-track students in the coming year.
This shift is propelling us ever further to develop excellence in long-distance learning. We were the first adopters of videoconferencing technology for distance learning at Pacific School of Religion, and since that time we have continued to explore other learning platforms. We are now offering regular online courses for lay and ordination-track students, using the open-source learning software Moodle, the new standard at the Graduate Theological Union.
Our outreach program to lay people continues to grow and take shape, and over the next year we will be offering several programs in the form of online courses, workshops, retreats, and on-campus talks. One of our goals is to become a provider of continuing education units for registered nurses and behavioral health providers who are seeking ways to incorporate spiritual perspectives into their work.
