Dumpster Divers Needed for EPA Bailout"...the EPA has already destroyed documents. The Christian Science Monitor reports that "scientific journals worth hundreds of thousands of taxpayer dollars were thrown in dumpsters in October." An EPA chemist told the Kansas City Star that one library was told to throw away journals. Laughing Off Disaster at the Bush White HouseLaughter in response to tough questions isn't unusual in the Bush White House. Yesterday's reponse to the 18 page letter from Iran's President Ahmadinejad was not much different from what we recently experienced when Bush was questioned by an undergraduate student at Johns Hopkins University about contractor impunity - although it was not nearly as abusive as the incoherent joking and laughter that Secretary Rumsfeld launched at public news broadcasters when questioned about the bombing of Afghanistan - where, by the way, we are still deeply involved in a full scale war.full story and more at DOGSPOT

Peace Activist Wins Nobel Prize in Literature In his politics a proponent of peace, and in his art a master of silence, Harold Pinter has received his just reward from the Swedish Academy with their announcement of the Nobel Prize in literature. It was Pinter's adaptation of "The French Lieutenant's Woman" in 1981 that helped launch the careers of Meryl Streep and Jeremy Irons. Pinter also began his career as an actor, and in the 50 years since has become one of the world's most widely respected playwrights, winning accolades from Tom Stoppard and Vaclav Havel. The occassion was true to form, by his own account: "I was called 20 minutes before the official announcement. The chair of the Nobel committee phoned and said, 'You have been awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature'. I remained silent, and then said, 'I'm speechless.'"In a report from ABC news, Nobel permanent secretary Horace Engdahl added to the academy's explanation for Pinter's win, saying the playwright "restored theatre to its basic elements - an enclosed space and unpredictable dialogue, where people are at the mercy of each other and pretence crumbles". In June of 2000, several writers for the Wall Street Journal won awards for daring reports of specific instances of terror: terror that continues systematically throughout Columbia. A frightening timeline leads to a trail of US funded terror squads operating in a similar manner today. "Parmilitaries routinely induced fear in the rural population by entering villages and rounding up the residents in the town plaza. They would then brutally kill a handful of villagers, often dismembering them with machetes and chainsaws, before ordering the rest of the people to leave the region... By forcibly displacing the rural population in this manner, the paramilitaries hoped to eliminate local support for the guerrillas. This strategy has aggravated the already grossly inequitable distribution of arable lands as large landowners, as well as multinational corporations interested in oil, coal and natural gas resources, have taken over much of the abandoned land."more
