for (i=0; i It is considered the nation's longest ongoing homicide investigation.
For years a task force made up of 50 local police detectives and FBI agents tried to solve the slayings.
But the trail has grown cold, and today the Green River serial killings remain unsolved.
Between 1982 and 1984, nearly 50 women in the Seattle area and Portland were killed.
Like the victims in the more recent slayings in Spokane and Tacoma, the Green River murder victims were the most vulnerable: They were prostitutes, runaways or street kids, many of them troubled or abused in their home lives.
They were white, black and Native American. Most were in their teens. Some left home, leaving behind bewildered parents.
The killings were named the Green River murders because the first five victims were found in the Green River in Kent, near the Meeker Street bridge.
Wendy Coffield, 16, was found there in the summer of 1982.
A few weeks later, the body of Debra Bonner, 23, washed up on a sandbar.
Amina Agisheff, 33, was the oldest victim.
A Montessori schoolteacher and a waitress, Agisheff disappeared in June 1982 after visiting her mother's apartment in downtown Seattle. Police think she may have accepted a ride from the killer.
Although the Green River killer was never caught, the investigation pioneered the use of computers and some other high-tech equipment and made innovations in the investigation of outdoor crime scenes.
Investigators collected the names of 20,000 potential suspects and searched the homes of some people, including a Spokane man who has since died of cancer.
Police believe the Green River killer died, is in prison on another offense or simply left the area.
And now a lone detective remains from the task force that had cost millions of dollars to maintain throughout the 1980s.
Detective Tom Jensen continues to take tips and match them against scores of files.
