History News
History News is a quarterly magazine of the American Association for State and Local
History (AASLH).
It provides articles on current trends, timely issues, and best practices for professional
development, and the overall improvement of the field of state and local history. The magazine also includes a
handy technical leaflet in each issue.
John Durel's "A Golden Age for Historic Properties" appeared in the Summer 2007 issue of Histoy News. This article has engendered much discussion in the field and AASLH is pleased to make it available in PDF format.

SUBMITTING AN ARTICLE FOR HISTORY NEWS: History News welcomes unsolicited articles for publication. All articles are reviewed by a
committee to ensure they fit the mission of AASLH and the magazine. Please send an abstract or completed article
to the editor for consideration. The guidelines are below.
SPECIFICATIONS FOR WRITERS
AASLH appreciates your willingness to contribute an article to History News magazine. Your donation
of time and effort reflects both on your knowledge of the field and passion for its growth.
Seeking:
Articles that address issues and concerns related to doing public history, and the challenges and success of
history professionals working in the field of state and local history in all its formats.
Length:
Feature Articles: 2,500 words
Departments (Award Winner Spotlight, Annual Meeting Spotlight): 1,000 words
Technical Leaflets: 4,000 to 6,000 words
Book Reviews: 500 words
Style:
The Chicago Manual of Style
Format:
1 electronic copy (Microsoft Word, Rich Text Format or Text Document) double spaced. Use endnotes. All articles should include author contact information. Technical Leaflets should include a list of resources. Book reviews should include bibliographical
listing of publication.
Images:
Color and black and white images acceptable. High resolution color photos of professional quality may be
submitted for cover photo consideration. Digital images should be sent in TIF format. Include photo credits with
article. Feature articles should include 6-8 images, department features 2-3 images, book reviews do not require
images. Tables may be substituted for images if appropriate.
