And in California and some other states, the problem traces in part to the fact that officials chose to require only minimal gains in the first years after the law passed and then very rapid annual gains later. One researcher likens it to the balloon payments that can sink homebuyers. Part of the reason for the troubles was that the states gambled the law would have been softened when it came up for reauthorization in 2007, but efforts to change it stalled. A Brigham Young University student, Justin Bergener, created the site, which also lets students post information about thefts, drugs and harassment. Bergener said he hopes students who might otherwise be too scared or shy to speak up will be willing to post on the site. Topic: Children and Family Source: Daily Mail (UK) Sharon Edwards, 40, bombarded the boy with as many as 50 text messages and emails a day, offered to buy him cocaine and regularly lured him into her bed. Yet she walked free from court yesterday after Judge Peter Fox QC said the married housewife was an unhappy woman who was unable to resist the advances of a 14 year old child. But last night the boy's mother attacked the judge's decision. She said: 'He's still a child. If this had been a man he would almost certainly have been jailed but instead she gets to walk free and pick up her life. (10/14/08) — Tuesday 14 October 2008 - 09:54:18 printer friendly Hanged for being a Christian in Iran Topic: Political Correctness Source: The Telegraph (UK) A month ago, the Iranian parliament voted in favour of a draft bill, entitled "Islamic Penal Code", which would codify the death penalty for any male Iranian who leaves his Islamic faith. Women would get life imprisonment. The majority in favour of the new law was overwhelming: 196 votes for, with just seven against. Imposing the death penalty for changing religion blatantly violates one of the most fundamental of all human rights. The right to freedom of religion is enshrined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, in the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, and in the European Convention of Human Rights. It is even enshrined as Article 23 of Iran's own constitution, which states that no one may be molested simply for his beliefs. And yet few politicians or clerics in Iran see any contradiction between a law mandating the death penalty for changing religion and Iran's constitution. There has been no public protest in Iran against it. If approved, it would overturn a California Supreme Court ruling that made the state only the second, after Massachusetts, to legalize same-sex marriage. On Friday in Connecticut, the state Supreme Court ruled the state would be the third to allow gay marriage. The urgency intensified last week with news that Proposition 8's supporters had far outraised its opponents and the measure was gaining support in public opinion polls. "Couples are making their plans to come in before November 4 because people are getting a little uneasy," said San Francisco Clerk-Recorder Karen Hong Lee. "It's too close to call, basically, and it's legal right now, so why wait? Why take the chance and say, 'Let's get married on November 5?"' (10/13/08) — Tuesday 14 October 2008 - 09:14:48 printer friendly MI teen abandoned in Neb Topic: Children and Family Source: Click on Detroit A Michigan mother drove roughly 12 hours to Omaha so she could abandon her 13-year-old son at a hospital under the state's unique safe-haven law, Nebraska officials said Monday. The boy, from the Detroit area, is the second teenager from outside Nebraska and 18th child overall abandoned in the state since July when the law took effect. There was no sign the boy was in immediate danger before he was abandoned and no indication why the boy's mother decided to leave him at the hospital. [Ed.: Nebraska allows the abandonment of "children" up to the age of 18.] (10/14/08) — Tuesday 14 October 2008 - 08:39:00 printer friendly MI, Principal suspended amid strip search claim Topic: Children and Family Source: Click on Detroit Monroe police have interviewed three seventh-grade girls who claim they were strip searched by a female teacher looking for missing cash. Deputy Police Chief Thomas Moore said more interviews are expected Wednesday, and investigators hope to turn over information to the county prosecutor by the end of the week. Moore said three parents came forward to complain that the female students were forced to disrobe down to their underwear at Trinity Lutheran School, about 35 miles southwest of Detroit. "Some were taken down to their bra and panties and some had to pull their tops out and shake them," said mother Martha Feller. (10/08/08) — Tuesday 14 October 2008 - 08:33:14 printer friendly ICE, stop breaking families apart Topic: Children and Family Source: Metro West Daily News While most talks lately have been about politics and the economy, support for undocumented immigrants made its way Wednesday to Boston's City Hall Plaza, where more than 300 people rallied against the raids that keep breaking families apart. Dubbed the "Witness for Justice Vigil," the event started with a group of Unitarians from the Arlington Street Church who, earlier this year, took the lead on welcoming immigrants and educating their own community about the realities of undocumented life.(10/04/08) — Monday 13 October 2008 - 11:09:54 printer friendly Settlements silence birth control problems Topic: Women's Health Source: Bloomberg Johnson & Johnson has spent at least $68.7 million to settle hundreds of lawsuits filed by women who suffered blood clots, heart attacks or strokes after using the company's Ortho Evra birth-control patch, court records show. J&J, the world's largest maker of health-care products, avoided trials through the confidential settlements and hasn't released the financial details to investors. Of 562 complaints reviewed by Bloomberg News, the vast majority of users alleged the patch caused deep-vein thrombosis, or blood clots in the legs, and pulmonary embolisms, or blood clots in the lungs. Some blamed it for heart attacks or strokes. The complaints blamed Ortho Evra for the deaths of 20 women. (10/10/08) — Monday 13 October 2008 - 10:26:11 printer friendly Dutch in red light credit scheme Topic: Porn, Prostitution, and Sexual Freedom Source: BBC News The Dutch city of Eindhoven is to award credit points to street prostitutes in exchange for good behaviour. Prostitutes with enough points will get street miles from the City Hall which they can use to buy designer clothes and furniture. In return they must take part in a city plan to help prostitutes find alternative employment. Dutch cities are starting to close red light districts where street prostitutes operate. [Ed.: a novel form of government regulation but government regulation nonetheless. I wonder how Dutch taxpayers feel about paying for a prostitute's designer clothes?] (110/01/08) — Monday 13 October 2008 - 10:11:05 printer friendly Commentary and Opinion Acting on outspoken beliefs Topic: Political Correctness Source: The Australian Author: Jane Cornwell Emma Thompson is equally vociferous on matters of faith. "I'm an atheist; I suppose you can call me a sort of libertarian anarchist. I regard religion with fear and suspicion. It's not enough to say that I don't believe in God. I actually regard the system as distressing: I am offended by some of the things said in the Bible and the Koran, and I refute them." (10/15/08) — Wednesday 15 October 2008 - 04:31:10 printer friendly Windfall moms join deadbeat dads Topic: Father's Rights Source: Poughkeepsie Journal Author: Jonna Spilbor Women on welfare should not be allowed to get boob jobs. There, I said it. This was not a topic to which I had devoted a lot of thought. I've rarely, if ever, stood in a grocery line behind a woman using food stamps, so impressed by her saline-filled breasts that I asked for the name of her plastic surgeon. Recently, however, I stumbled upon a woman who not only managed to afford cosmetic surgery while feeding her family with food stamps, but who literally could write the book on "How To Beat The System and Screw My Ex-Husband All In One Fell Swoop." She disgusts me. She disgusts me to the point where I am ready to march on Washington wearing a fake-breast costume covered in food-stamp pasties while carrying a blazing copy of the Child Support Standards Act on a stick.(10/12/08) — Tuesday 14 October 2008 - 10:03:34 printer friendly Okl. Default fatherhood Topic: Men's Movement Source: Tulsa World An alleged father must appear at a child support hearing to request a paternity test. If he does not appear, he is legally designated as the father and child support is established in most cases. Once designated as the father, that person is financially responsible for the child until he or she is 18 or adopted with a few stipulations for petitions which may vacate the original order, according to Oklahoma statutes. DHS records show that Samuels was served papers to appear for his child support hearing in 2001, but Samuels said he was working in Texas at the time and could not have received the notice. Wagner said by Oklahoma law someone can be legally served if the subpoena is put into the hands of someone 15 or older who lives at the same residence as the person. But Samuels said the documents never touched his hands. Regardless of the outcome of the DNA test, which Samuels spent three years trying to get, it was already too late. (10/13/08) — Tuesday 14 October 2008 - 09:48:01 printer friendly So teachers must be spies Topic: Children and Family Source: The Guardian (UK) Author: Catherine Bennett Even if violent extremism is likely to elude them, there are plenty of other challenges for Britain's infinitely resourceful teachers. If their job description can be extended, as the toolkit proposes, to encompass espionage, at the same time that they instil in children the importance of 'mutual respect and understanding', the criminality of violence, and primacy of 'staying safe', Balls's task force could surely be persuaded to stamp out knife crime and build what he calls 'more cohesive and resilient communities', perhaps by dismantling faith schools? And once the teachers have created this heaven on earth, they can teach us all to spell. [Warning: sarcasm at work] (10/12/08) — Tuesday 14 October 2008 - 08:29:33 printer friendly The Invisible Muslimah Topic: Gender Discrimination Source: Muslimah Media Watch What’s the first image that comes to your mind when you think of a Muslim woman? Is she Arab or South Asian? White or maybe Afghan or Indonesian? Notice that I haven’t mentioned African American (and also Latina). The media depiction of Muslim women usually does not include African American women. Often, Muslim women are depicted as coming from the Middle East or South Asia, and occasionally sub-Saharan Africa. Also, there has been increasing focus on Muslimahs of European descent, especially converts such as Yvonne Ridley and Dr. Ingrid Mattson. When African American Muslims are depicted in the media, it is usually a male face. (10/08/08) — Monday 13 October 2008 - 11:15:10 printer friendly Google highlights day care cost Topic: Children and Family Source: Eagle Forum The company planned to raise the price of infant day care from $1,425 a month to almost $2,500. Toddler and preschool care, too, would rise sharply. According to New York Times business reporter Joe Nocera, the average family with two children in Google day care would go, under the new plan, from paying $33,000 a year to paying over $57,000. Why the steep increase in day care costs? Until now, Google has been subsidizing its day care at a rate of $37,000 a year per child. Most other companies in Silicon Valley subsidize day care for their top employees' children at close to $12,000 a year. Through the drastic increase in the cost to parents, Google hopes to narrow the gap between what parents pay and what this state-of-the-art day care actually costs. (10/08/08) — Monday 13 October 2008 - 10:43:52 printer friendly BBC horror film faces religious outcry Topic: Political Correctness Source: The Telegraph (UK) Author: Duncan Gardham The series, which has been likened to a horror film, depicts a man possessed by the devil and being skinned alive in a gay sauna. Another episode shows a father threatening to sexually assault his daughter while in another, Mother Teresa is seen on her death bed. In other scenes blood drips from the eyes of those supposed to be possessed by the Devil. The series, called Apparitions, was the idea of the actor Martin Shaw, who also stars in it as a Roman Catholic priest. (10/12/08) — Monday 13 October 2008 - 10:31:52 printer friendly Paris intellectuals make case for porn Topic: Porn, Prostitution, and Sexual Freedom Source: The Guardian (UK) Author: Lizzy Davies It could only happen in the country that gave us Emmanuelle, Monica Bellucci in an anal rape scene and two young actresses romping through a hyper-violent bad-girl road movie with real-life sex and a title so rude it could not be advertised on buses. A group of French intellectuals has now gone one step further in the quest to integrate hardcore erotica into mainstream cinema by holding Paris's first alternative pornographic film festival: a no-holds-barred celebration of X-rated action that organisers say showcases a new wave of progressive porn that not only titillates but empowers.
