For me, the most visible sign of globalization has always been the shipping container. These big, freight car like boxes, are the red blood cells of global commerce. I see hundreds of them from my office everyday as they travel a rail line hugging the Mississippi River. And then I see identical (perhaps the same?) containers labeled Maersk, Sealand, Hanjin, Hapag-Lloyd, and more as I visit cities and ports around the world.
Well someone at the BBC also recognized the vital, very public role these boxes play.
"The Box is an ambitious and unique year-long project for BBC News to tell the story of international trade and globalisation by tracking a standard shipping container around the world," according to the BBC. "We have painted and branded a BBC container and bolted on a GPS transmitter so you can follow its progress all year round as it criss-crosses the globe. The Box will hopefully reach the US, Asia, the Middle East, Europe and Africa and when it does BBC correspondents will be there to report on who's producing goods and who's consuming them," they add.

The president of the United States always has a huge impact on the rest of the world. Yet the rest of the world, understandably, has no voice in the election. But what if they did?
The Economist magazine has created an imaginary "Global Electoral College" where they gather votes from around the world. "The Economist has redrawn the electoral map to give all 195 of the world's countries (including the United States) a say in the election's outcome. As in America, each country has been allocated a minimum of three electoral-college votes with extra votes allocated in proportion to population size. With over 6.5 billion people enfranchised, the result is a much larger electoral college of 9,875 votes. But rally your countrymen — a nation must have at least ten individual votes in order to have its electoral-college votes counted," they say.
As of this writing, the Obama/Biden ticket has 8,408 global electoral votes. The McCain/Palin ticket has 16. You can vote here.
This exercise is, of course, all in good fun. But could it cause damage?
Charlie Brown at Undiplomatic thinks it might. In a post titled "Memo to World: Shut Up," Brown says, "Back in October 2004, the Guardian (U.K.) thought it would be peachy to encourage Brits and other non-Americans to write to folks in Clark County, Ohio and encourage voters there to support John Kerry. To say it was a disaster is an understatement. Clark County residents abused the Guardian — and even worse, they voted for Bush. You’d think that Europeans would have learned their lesson. But nooooo — they are still interested in mucking things up here.
