Permanent Director Hired!
The Living Dharma Centre has now filled the position for Permanent Director. Acting as a creative partner to our seventeen Temples, the Director will now work with Temple representatives to develop and deliver National Programs, Events, and Activities for the purpose of propagating Jodo Shinshu Buddhism to the Canadian public. February Message from the Socho
May this letter of Update find you in good health and spirit in the light of compassion of Amida Buddha in the beginning of 2008. First of all I wish to join with you in paying tribute to Shinran Shonin as our many temples of Jodo Shinshu Hongwanji tradition are observing Hoonko in his honour and memory at this time of the year.
Jodo Shinshu is one of the Pure Land schools in Mahayana Buddhism and is often called the religion of Hongwan, the Primal Vow of Bodhisattva Dharmakara or Amida Buddha. Therefore the key word to understand Jodo Shinshu must be the primal vow.
The vow is not the wish in the sense as you wish to fly in the air. Unless you are bird, you cannot physically fly, or many people wish to win the 649 jackpot. I don't say it's impossible, but the chance of winning is one of many millions. However, Bodhisattva's vow is the will of determination, dedication, inspiration and commitment backed by wisdom and compassion. There is a difference between wish and vow.
The Hongwan consists of three; the first is the working of the perfect wisdom to create the world called Pure Land which transcends this human world. Because there are so many pains and sorrows in this world, while there are some happiness, excitement, and peace. The second is the working of the perfect compassion to welcome each and everyone into this Pure Land without any discrimination and exception. And the third is the ways and means to accomplish the entire project, that is, to become Namoamidabutsu itself.
Therefore once you hear and cherish the Name of Amida Buddha, you are assured to live in peace as well as die in peace.
