 In Memoriam -- Al ZappalaWe were saddened to hear of the death of one of our most dedicated members, Al Zappala. Al died on August 14, in the arms of his wife, Joan Kosloff after a battle with cancer.
Al was the father of Sgt. Sherwood Baker, who was killed in action on April 26, 2004. He was a founding member of Gold Star Families Speak Out and a tireless advocate for peace. In 2006, when MFSO set up a display of boots representing fallen soldiers outside the Capitol during Operation House Call, Al maintained a daily vigil for six weeks to make sure the boots were treated with respect and care -- an action typical of the dignity and dedication he brought to all of his work. He will be deeply missed by everyone whose lives he touched especially his wife Joan, his sons Dante Zappala and Raphael Zappala, his stepchildren Robert Aycox, Victoria Rodney, and Mark Aycox, and his former wife and dear friend Celeste Zappala.
