U.S. to sell Israel Air Force new bunker-buster bombs--HAARETZ

Posted September 14th, 2008 by mercille Despite reservations in Washington regarding a possible Israeli strike on Iran, the American administration will supply Israel with sophisticated weapons for heavily fortified targets, the U.S. administration announced. The U.S. Department of Defense announced it would sell the Israel Air Force 1,000 new smart bombs, rumored to significantly enhance the IAF's military capabilities. The deal was approved amid public and secret messages from Washington, with the Americans expressing their reservations about a possible Israeli strike against the Islamic Republic's suspected nuclear sites. The Pentagon's announcement, which came on Friday, said the U.S. will provide Israel with 1,000 units of Guided Bomb Unit-39 (GBU-39) - a special weapon developed for penetrating fortified facilities located deep underground. AMY GOODMAN Breaking with Convention, War, Peace and the Presidency

Posted August 26th, 2008 by webmaster AMY GOODMAN: This is Democracy Now!, democracynow.org. Breaking with Convention, War, Peace and the Presidency. We're broadcasting this week from Denver. We'll be traveling from the streets to the suites to the convention floor. And while much of the attention will be focused on what's happening inside the convention, we begin our coverage outside the heavily fortified gates of the Pepsi Center. Democracy Now! correspondent Jeremy Scahill filed this report.JEREMY SCAHILL: The city of Denver has been converted to a massive monument celebrating Barack Obama. This weekend, some 4,000 delegates to the Democratic National Convention began flooding the city for the much-anticipated coronation of the man chosen by the Democrats to face John McCain in November. Some 15,000 journalists are here, as well. Read more

Protests At Democratic National Convention

Posted August 26th, 2008 by webmaster The March to End All Occupations at Home and Abroad drew activists from Los Angeles, New York, Florida, Maine, Chicago, many driving overnight to attend the march and rally. In keeping with the theme of the rally, a lineup of multinational speakers linked the war in Iraq to the occupations of Afghanistan and Palestine and to Washington’s campaign of sanctions and threats against Iran; they also connected the struggle against the war in Iraq with the many struggles at home, including the foreclosure and eviction crisis, draconian budget cuts, the occupation of oppressed communities by police, the continued fight for justice for survivors of hurricanes Katrina and Rita, and the racist raids and detentions targeting immigrant workers, and the theft of Indigenous land. CONFLICT IN THE CAUCASUS – A TALE OF A PROXY WAR with innocent people slaughtered

Posted August 22nd, 2008 by webmaster Many Western politicians, among them Cheney, Brown and Miliband and much of the Western media would have us believe that Russia is the aggressive imperialist power and that the US and other Western powers are defending Georgian democracy against outside invasion, with a nonchalant NATO observing from the sidelines as a force for calm in the world. The truth is more complex if not totally contrary to this view. While the nature and extent of the Russian military response to the apparently unprovoked attack by Saakashvili’s military on South Ossetia is highly questionable, it is the sinister, creeping enlargement of NATO along the borders of Russia that has provoked this conflict.  Read more

Draft deal gives US legal basis to remain in Iraq

IRAQ: BAGHDAD - US and Iraqi negotiators completed a draft deal yesterday to give US troops a legal basis to stay in Iraq after 2008, without setting out a timetable for their withdrawal, Iraq's top negotiator said. The White House denied that the long-awaited deal - which will replace a UN Security Council resolution that now provides the basis for the US presence - had been finalised."The delegations finished the draft which now goes to the political leaders for discussions," chief Iraqi negotiator Mohammed al-Haj Hamoud said. Iraq's political leadership must approve it and submit it to parliament. He said the draft did not spell out a timetable for withdrawal and also left unresolved the question of whether US troops would be subject to Iraqi law. - ( Reuters ) Read more

Conflict in the Caucasus: A Warning for Ireland

Posted August 12th, 2008 by Dette_McLoughli... Galway Alliance Against War- Press ReleaseThe Galway Alliance Against War has released a statement “deploring the war presently being waged in the Caucasus. We believe it is only through negotiations that the dispute over South Ossetia can be brought to a peaceful conclusion.”  However, the Galway peace group says “the Irish people should not ignore this conflict in the Caucasus as it could have implications for Ireland if the Lisbon Treaty is ever forced upon us.” “Under the Lisbon Treaty, all EU countries, including Ireland, are obliged to come to the aid of other EU states that are attacked. Georgia has already applied for EU membership, so this is a predicament we could face in the future if the Lisbon Treaty becomes a reality.” Read more

Israel threatens to wage illegal, pre-emptive military attack on Iran

Posted July 16th, 2008 by webmaster On Monday July 14th Israel’s senior defence official, General Amos Gilad during an interview with BBC Radio four’s Today programme said that Israel is preparing itself to take military action against Iran and that it would do so if diplomacy fails. The statement came only a day after the Sunday Times revealed that “President George W Bush backs Israeli plan for strike on Iran”. These threats are being made following reports of Israeli aerial military exercise in the first week of June which involved over 100 F-15 and F-16 fighters and was described by a senior Pentagon official as a dress rehearsal for a military strike on Iranian nuclear plants. In the same week, Shaol Mofaz, Israel’s deputy prime minister publicly stated that if Iran continues with its nuclear programme, Israel “will attack it”. Read more
