Experience
Berkeley Bay Festival-
canceled no funding.
12-5 Main event
The
City of Berkeley Marina Experience Program presented our Last annual Berkeley Bay Festival,
at the Marina on Saturday, April 17, 2004, 12 noon to 5:00
p.m. This has been a community event since 1937! The
Festival theme is environmental education and the Bay. This free event is for all
ages. Because of budget problems we have not been able to offer this event
for the past three years. We hope that by combining it with the Green Home
Expo we can share the costs and double to fun and educate at the same
time!
From 12 noon -5
p.m. we had walking tours through our new environmentally sensitive straw bale building.
Come meet the
architects and green product providers. To help the environment we
encourage alternate transportation and carpooling, if you are riding your
bike you'll be glad to know that the East Bay
Bicycle Coalition will provide free Bicycle Valet parking next to
Adventure Playground during the event.
In front of the
Marina office in the Marina Mall, there are exhibits, hands-on activities, nature arts and crafts vendors, Book
sellers, entertainment and fun. 57
organizations will have interesting things to learn about and share. (see
below for web links with these groups.)
Great food, and
great music; Lee Waterman - jazz, Gary Lapow- children's music, the All Star Cajun Band
, and Dana Smith Juggler and his famous dog Lacey.
At K dock there were free sailboat rides offered by the Cal Sailing
Club. Rides and paddling lessons in the Berkeley Dragon Boat, and Horn blower
dining yachts took mini tours through out the day. We were very glad
to welcome back the historic sailing barge the Alma and the Historic
Tug boat the Wallace Foss to the festival
this year. Walk aboard the U.S. Coast Guard vessel ,Take mud
samples on the Cordell Expeditions- research boat, and a on the ferry pier-oil response vessel the
Spill spoiler II, are available for dockside tours.
Across the street, in Adventure Playground,
kids of all ages were encouraged to build, paint and play on recycled wood
and materials. Next door, in the Shorebird Park we had an Evelyn Roth giant nylon
whale storytelling
theater. Children are able to dress up in costume and listen to Native
American stories. The Nature Center was open for you to see the 100 gallon
bay aquarium and exhibits. In addition, from 1-4:30, The Co
evolution institute had Insects from around the world for you to
touch and hold. Astrowizard brought a
portable Planetarium which will be set up in the covered classroom next to
the new building.

Stewards
To
enable the most out of this educational experience, we encouraged the
general public and suggested that Parents and Teachers from elementary
school through college to encourage their students to attend.
We provided everyone with, a PASSPORT which includes names,
addresses, phone numbers, web sites and a description of each organization. When
they do
the activity and collect information from the tables, they can get
the PASSPORT TO THE BAY stamped. Over
130 people participated and the top numbers of stamps earned was 58!
