They aredesigned to completely eliminate the source of suffering:our belief in and identification with our selfish ego.By reflecting on the immense suffering that allbeings, everywhere, experience, our compassion becomesdeeper and more limitless. We wish to free all beings fromtheir suffering and even its causes; we desire, more thananything, to bring them happiness and peace. The more wemeditate on suffering, the deeper our compassion becomes,until one day we finally realize that to be of the greatesthelp to beings, we ourselves must attain enlightenment forthe benefit of all others. AsSogyal Rinpoche writes,This compassionate wish is called Bodhicittain Sanskrit; bodhi means our enlightened essence,and citta means heart. So we could translate it as"the heart of our enlightened mind." To awakenand develop the heart of the enlightened mind isto ripen steadily the seed of our buddha nature,that seed that in the end, when our practice ofcompassion has become perfect and all-embracing,will flower majestically intobuddhahood. Bodhicitta, then, is the spring andsource and root of the entire spiritual path.(The Tibetan Bookof Living and Dying, page 201)The compassion practices described in this section:Tonglen for an Uncomfortable AtmosphereSelf-TonglenTonglen for Othersare intended to uncover and awaken our bodhicitta, ourenlightened courage, and thus bring us close to realizingour wisdom nature.Giving and receivingTonglen means "giving and receiving."In the Tonglen visualization, we receive, with a strong compassionatemotivation, the suffering and pain of others; and we givethem, with a tender and confident heart, all of our love, joy,well-being and peace. Normally, we don't want to giveaway our happiness, nor do we want to take on anotherperson's suffering, but this not-wanting is the voice of ourselfish ego. We cherish "I" more than we do "others" andthus everything we think or do has a self-centeredmotivation. Following our ego's commands all the timekeeps us trapped in cycles of hope and frustration, fear anddisappointment.The voice of your ego may warn you that Tonglencould "harm" you, but this is not true. The compassionpractices are designed to unravel the selfish patterning ofthe ego and gradually reinforce your confidence in theradiant wisdom and compassion of your true nature, whichis indestructible. Tonglen is a skillful training in acompletely new way of being, in which you begin todevelop a limitless, fearless and unbiased compassiontoward all creation. One key to attaining enlightenment isto develop your compassion so profoundly that you cometo love and cherish all other beings more than yourself.Thus although at first the Tonglen practice appearsto be a courageous response to the suffering of others, youwill find that training in compassion is actually benefitingyou and bringing you further along the path to liberation.The Tonglen practices may also enable you to:Bring difficulties and illness onto your spiritual pathHeal your past and present sufferingPrevent or relieve burnoutTransform your relationship with othersThree Tonglenpractices  Copyright 1997-2006 C.
