Because of the interdisciplinary nature of Hispanic American Studies, relevant titles are often dispersed throughout the general collection depending upon subject matter. Use Socrates, Stanford's online catalog, to locate books, films and other materials. Use the library's print or electronic indexes to locate journal articles and published papers. The project Linking the Americas provides full text of most Latin American books published by the Stanford University Press, plus other important materials. Encyclopedias and Handbooks Encyclopedias, Handbooks, Dictionaries, etc. can provide useful descriptions, overviews, and lists of recommended reading on a topic (Most of these materials are works of reference and therefore do not circulate but can be used in the library). Chicano Literature: A Reference Guide (Green Library Information Center & Stacks PS153 .M4 C46 1985) offers a comprehensive guide to Chicano writers, periods, and genres. The scope of this book spans from 1521 through 1985. It contains biographical essays of Mexican-American writers (including selected bibliographies), as well as essays on subjects such as "Hispanic-Mexican Literature in the Southwest, 1521-1848," "Chicano Poetry," "Chican@ Theatre," and "Chican@ Children's Literature." Contemporary Chicana & Chicano Art (Green Lib. HASRC (Lane Room), N6538 .M4 C664 2002 vols.1-3) Includes entries on artists, works, culture, and education.. Dictionary of Chicano Folklore (Green Lib. HASRC (Lane Room), GR111 .M49 C37 2000) Mexican-American social life and customs, bridging Chican@ culture & language, includes literature, history, music, art, pop culture, border studies & other terminology. Dictionary of Mexican American History, 1981 (Green Library Information Center & HASRC, Stacks E184 .M5 M453) is an excellent introduction to the major figures, events, laws and organizations pertinent to Mexican American History. Includes a chronology, glossary, and the complete text of the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo and the Protocol of Queretaro. Encyclopedia of Latin America and Caribbean Art (Green Lib. HASRC-Lane Room: N6502 E53 2000). Encyclopedia Latina: history, culture, and society in the United States (HASRC-Lane Room: E184 .S75 E587 2005, vols 1-4). Encyclopedia of Latino Pupular Culture (Green Library HASRC, E184 .S75 E59 2004, vols 1-2) is an A-Z reference source which provides historical context and sociocultural background to illuminate the resurgent popularity of Latin@ popular culture worldwide. Handbook of Hispanic Cultures in the United States: Anthropology (Green Library Information Center E184 .S75 H365 1993 v. 4) Compares the culture of Hispanic groups in the United States--Mexican Americans, Puerto Ricans, Cubans and others from Central and South America as well as the Caribbean. Topics examined include: ethnicity, intergroup relations, language and culture, technology and material culture, family, marriage and kinship, religion and ritual, patterns of health and disease, schooling processes, and political activity and organization. The Hispanic-American Almanac : a Reference Work on Hispanics in the United States (Green Library Information Center: E184 .S75 H557 1994) contains a chronology, biographies, and essays on topics ranging from music, religion, business, theater and family. Hispanic Writers: A Selection of Sketches from Contemporary Authors (Green Library Information Center PQ 7081.3 H58 1991) Contains biographical and bibliographical information on more that 400 authors who are part of 20th century Hispanic literature and culture in the Americas. Hispanics in Hollywood: an Encyclopedia on Film and Television (HASRC-Lane Room: PN1995.9 .H47 R49 2000 ) Contains synopses of films and television shows, as well as brief biographies of Hispanic actors and filmmakers. Masterpieces on Latino Literature (Green Library Information Center PQ7081. A1 M29 1994) Contains plot summaries and brief critical analysis of fiction, non-fiction as well as poetry, plays, short stories and essays of notable Latino writers and thinkers, including Laura Esquivel, Sandra Cisneros, Luis Miguel Valdez, Oscar Hijuelos, and Raymond Barrio. The Latino Encyclopedia (Green Library Information Center: E 184 .S75 L357 1996, vols 1-6). This six volume set contains entries on people, organizations, geographic locations, history, entertainment, military activity, religion, family life, court cases, cultural movements, and other facets of life that have unique expression among Latinos. The Oxford Encyclopedia of Latinos and Latinas in the United States (HASRC-Lane Room: E184 .S75 O97 2005, vols 1-4). This four volume set contains entries on culture, language, media, politics, race, customs, arts, health, sports and more. Bibliographies Bibliographies can help you identify books and articles on a subject. They may include short descriptions called annotations. There are many that deal with African Americans. In Socrates look for Topics with the subheading --Bibliography, or use the Bibliographic Index (Green Library Information Center Z1002.B594) or browse near the ones listed below. Annotated Bibliography of Sources on Mexican Immigration (HASRC-Lane Room: F870. M5 V339 1987) Lists the resources used to write the Rand report on Mexican immigration to California. Coverage includes the history of Mexican immigration, effects of immigrants on the public sector, and the social and economic integration of Mexican immigrants and their U.S. born offspring. Bibliografia Chicana: A Guide to Information Sources (Green Library Information Center Z1361 .M4 T73) gives annotated citations from 1848-1974. A Bibliography of Criticism of Contemporary Chicano Literature (Green Library Information Center Z1229 .M48 E36) cites criticism of Chicano literature from 1960 to mid-1979 organized by genre, author, and topic. Bibliography of Mexican American History (Green Library Information Center Z1361 .M4 M414 1984) is intended as a comprehensive research bibliography of primary and secondary sources pertaining to Mexican American history. A Comprehensive Bibliography for the Study of American Minorities, 1976 (Green Information Center and Education Library: Z1361 .E4 M529, 2 vols.) Vol. 2 contains bibliographical essays and listings for Puerto Rican Americans, Cuban Americans, and Mexican Americans. Chicano Anthology Index: A Comprehensive Author, Title, and Subject Index to Chicano Anthologies, 1965-1987 (Web and Green Library Information Center Z1361 .M4 G37 1990) The resource identifies 280 anthologies, indexing approximately 5,000 essays and other creative works published about the Chican@s since 1965.Web resource incorporates the print resource Cubans in the United States: A Bibliography for Research in the Social and Behavioral Sciences, 1960-1983 (Green Library HASRC-Lane Room: Z1361 .C85 M32 1984) focuses on the growing literature about Cuban Americans. A Guide to the History of California (Green Library Information Center & HASRC -Lane Room: Z1261 .G85 1989) includes relevant chapters on "Hispanic California" and "California Chicanos." Hispanic Image on the Silver Screen, 1898-1935 ; (Green Library Information Center PN1995.9 .L37 R55 1992); Censorship and Hollywood's Hispanic Image, 1936-1955 (Green Library Information Center PN1995.9 .L37 R53 1993); and Contemporary Hollywood's Negative Hispanic Image: 1956-1993 (Green Library Information Center PN1995.9 L37 R54 1994) This three volume set looks at over 7,000 films (including television), almost all of the entries contain a brief scenario which details the film's Hispanic connection. Included are a stereotype, a historical interpretation, specific nation, associated behavior or attitudes, and a list of the Hispanic actors and actresses. Immigration and Ethnicity: A Guide to Information Sources (Green Library Information Center Z7165 .U5 B83) cites titles pertaining to Mexican, Cuban, Puerto Rican and other Spanish-speaking immigration to the US. Latinas of the Americas: A Sourcebook (Green Library Information Center Z7964 .L3 S76 1989) has recent scholarship on Hispanic American women, as well as women in Latin America. Latinos in the United States: A Historical Bibliography (Green Library Information Center Z1361 .S7 L37 1986) contains 1382 citations drawn from America: History and Life (see below) between 1973-1985. Periodical Indexes and Databases Indexes (in paper and electronic formats) or Databases can help you identify articles in magazines, newspapers, scholarly journals and other resources.
