The Scoop on Manhattan's Only All-Vegan Ice Cream Parlorby Brownbird Rudy RelicOctober 10, 2008 4:26pmFiled under: Food Ice Cream New York City Product Review Restaurants Sweets Blurry Iphone Pic of an Awesome New PlaceNew York City is home to a plethora of vegan delicacies, from the exotic and gourmet to ethnic and all-American staples; the city is a one-stop shop for pure vegan goodness. Now, thanks to the Proprietors of Philadelphia's only Vegan Lunch Truck, (Viva Las Vegans) Manhattanites and Lower Eastsiders alike have something new to rejoice.
Lula's Sweet Apothecary is Manhattan's only all-vegan, fully functioning Ice Cream Parlor. Rooted in the old-fashioned pharmacy parlors of yesteryear it operates just like you would expect it to; right down to the Hamilton Beach hand-mixers and soda-shop menu.
All of the ice cream is original, store-made and delicious. I had the chance to sample a few of the flavors and was blown away by the full-bodied, creamy sweetness of each of the choices; Chicago Soy Dairy soft-serve is pretty awesome as well.
From sundaes to shakes, sodas to malts and everything from banana splits to flurries they have the tools to keep your sweet tooth tingling. And, just in case that wasn't enough to send your body into giddy-filled gyrations, they also carry Red Mango and Gone Pie baked goods along with fair trade coffee and hot chocolate.
They are located at 516 E. 6th Street between A & B. They've yet to have a grand opening but don't let that deter you from sampling the scrumptiousness (Check their website for hours).
Big ups to Chloe at Girlie Girl Army for the tip!

Banksy's Pet Store Hits New Yorkby Anne SullivanOctober 10, 2008 2:20pmFiled under: Activism Animal Products Animal Testing & Vivisection Art & Craft Environmentalism Events Farmed Animals Food Health & Nutrition Media New York City Free Range NuggetsGuerrilla artist Banksy has opened his first official exhibition in New York yesterday. "Village Pet Store And Charcoal Grill" is at 89 7th Avenue between West 4th and Bleeker Street. The fake pet shop he's created aims to question "our relationship with animals and the ethics and sustainability of factory farming."
The BBC has more photos and full info and video is available from Wooster Collective. Finally, an art exhibit that I care enough to go see. Take that Damien Hirst, you sick bastard.
I'll post a full report after I pay a visit to the exhibit, which runs until October 31st and is open daily from 10am until midnight. Vegan group Sea Shepherd donated $3,000 to the campaign, and I was the Sea Shepherd member who served with the two groups then. The post below is a record of what serving on the second week of their 2008 Galapagos campaign was like. For the first week, click here.

Where else would you be able to enjoy a full bar and vegan goodies like Red Bamboo Brooklyn's famous creole soul chicken, buffalo bbq wings, and cajun fried shrimp while you cringe in anger and barfiness while that man with the not so steady hand from the Palin '08 ticket calls you one of his "friends"?
Since our trust funds and stock portfolios have plummeted thanks to 8 years of dog-gone-it, mavericky Wall Street deregulations, this is a pay your own way party with no subsidies or bailouts.
However, in honor of (wink, wink) the Republican's 2008 presidential/vice presidential nominee, who can see Russia from her igloo in Alaska (!!!), Red Bamboo Brooklyn will be offering discounted Vegan White Russians for just $5!!
If you're on Facebook, RSVP for the event there.
Since there are indeed such things as Republican vegans (just like there are Republican gays), we welcome folks of all stripes - and even if you come cheering for Palin '08, we promise we will show you more mercy and compassion than what Palin has shown to Alaska's wolves, polar bears, and other animals.
Comments (0) PermalinkTravis Barker, No Longer Vegetarian; Still Injury Prone and Seemingly Ignorantby Jason DasOctober 9, 2008 4:19pmFiled under: Celebrities Food Health & Nutrition Music Stupid We haven't mentioned him in two years, but former Blink-182 drummer Travis Barker's name still drives a tremendous amount of search engine traffic to SuperVegan. Obviously there are better sources for stories about him, but his fans are super dedicated. All we ever did is give him shit for considering eating meat to mend a broken arm that he didn't realize was broken for three weeks and maybe also had a tumor (yeah).
Well, now he's officially not vegetarian (though Vegetarian Star still thinks he is; vegetarians don't eat meat--look it up!). He survived a horrible plane crash recently (based on our traffic stats, the news must have come out on September 20th), and is eating meat for the first time in 25 years to help recover from third-degree burns. Maybe it is his only hope of recovering, but I hope that's not really true. Sounds like he was eating just as poorly as two years ago: "Because I was a vegetarian, for my first three surgeries, it was hard to get any of my grafts to take to my real skin. I have such low levels of protein. I need protein from food rather than just protein supplements. I changed my diet. I would do anything I possibly could if they said like, 'There's a possibility you might heal faster if you do eat meat or just change your eating habits.' So I did. I don't regret it at all, I feel so much better."
Protein supplements? Really? You can't find vegetarian sources of protein? Anyway, I hope he recovers OK and can satisfactorily re-tattoo his skin. I also hope he goes vegetarian again, and maybe finds a way to eat healthier. I also hope this post gets lots and lots of traffic for SuperVegan. Comments (24) PermalinkThe Reappropriation Of Meat?by Brownbird Rudy RelicOctober 9, 2008 1:28pmFiled under: Food Health & Nutrition Regardless of palette and preference, fake meat tends to be an acquired taste. Carnivores lambaste the creation for "not being enough like meat" (duh!) while some veg*ns deride it for being too much like the murderous muck. Personally, I eschew the taste politics altogether; I have no qualms with relishing in the cruelty-free concoction, but I don't need it to survive either.
Movements within the veg*n community to move away from the over processed, often over priced meat fakery has been bubbling for years. Smaller companies have taken the helm by creating minimally processed grain-meats and vegetable loafs that aim to reappropriate the concept.
Field Roast is one such company. Yesterday, Seattle's weekly The Stranger ran a piece that investigated the phenomena and sent a vegetarian to get the goods.
I'm interested to hear your take on the whole fake meat phenomena; please voice your opinion in the comment section. If cruelty-free treats do anything besides send vegans into a dizzy tizzy, it's get them talking.
Since then, Melisser has transformed her blog from vegan mainstay to a definitive destination for baking aficionados of all stripes and has even blessed the San Francisco area by creating her own vegan baking company: Sugar Beat Sweets.
SF Weekly's SFoodie blog did a decent little post about the Urban Housewife and even posted a video taken at World Veg Festival.

On Prop 2 Video Makes Me Laugh, Think And Want To Dance!by Brownbird Rudy RelicOctober 7, 2008 10:05amFiled under: Activism Animal Rights California Farmed Animals Government, Law & Politics Whether you see animal welfare causes as a slippery slope or a stepping stone, one thing is for certain: factory farming sucks.
California's Proposition 2 is one-two punch to the gullet of those Animal Ag-holes who consciously hold profit above all else.
Recently the Yes! On Prop 2 campaign released the following video: it's cute, it's catchy and most of all, effective.
