A fallen angel of Islam, a powerful subversive spirit and supposedly the chief of all Djin. Others say he is the demon Azazel, who after being thrust from Heaven is renamed Eblis and becomes the ruler of the devils. The word 'eblis' means 'despair'. According to one account, when Adam was created God commanded all the angels to worship him, but Eblis replied, 'Me thou hast created of smokeless fire, and shall I reverence a creature made of dust?' God turned the disobedient angel into a Shaitan or Sheytβn (Devil, the same word as Satan), condemning him to haunt ruins and to eat unblessed food until Judgment Day. Eblis then became the father of Devils. Other account tells that, at the time of the creation of humankind, Allah sent his angels to Earth to destroy the Djin (a race of beings created from the intense desert winds who were flaunting Allah's laws). After killing and dispersing most of them, the angelic army captured Eblis. He was then taken to Heaven and educated in heavenly ways, quickly gaining stature there. Meanwhile, the surviving Djin reorganized back on Earth, forming a new nation. Learning about it, Eblis, who despite his angelic status was still hungry for power, flew down to Earth and rejoined them, eventually becoming their king.
