An Online GothaAN ONLINE GOTHA Welcome to my Online Gotha. Section I encompasses those families which have heldhereditary sovereign status in European states, plus Brazil,since the Napoleonic era. Section II includes two somewhat overlapping groups ofhouses: those which hold Princely or Ducal rank, and those which havetraditionally been considered as "Mediatized" Houses. Traditionally,the term "Mediatized" has been defined as describing those Houses ofthe former Holy Roman Empire which losttheir sovereignty during the Napoleonic era. The most important thing whichtraditionally distinguished the "Mediatized" houses from othernon-sovereign houses is that they have traditionally been considered to havebeen granted by the Congress of Viennathe status of equal birth with the sovereign houses. Not all houses usuallydesignated as "mediatized" were actually sovereign at the beginningof the Napoleonic era or, for that matter, at any time. Some seem to havefallen into this category by accident or misunderstanding by scholars andhistorians. Other houses, which have as good historical claims to be consideredmediatized as some who are traditionally included, have not even been listed inthe Almanach de Gotha or among the Fürstliche Häuser of Genealogisches Handbuchdes Adels. (For a discussion of these houses and the definition of"Mediatized", I refer the reader to a short essay byWilliam Addams Reitwiesner.) After carefully reviewing the situation and thesomewhat arbitrary way in which certain houses came to be designated as"Mediatized", I have decided to dispense with that classification. I have begun a GothaSupplement. This section will contain a small selection of houses of the uppernobility which do not fit into the criteria of Sections I or II. The advantage of an Online Gothais that it can be instantly updated and corrected. A printed equivalent becomesobsolete as soon as it is published. Thus I welcome any additions orcorrections which any reader may be able to supply, and will update thearticles accordingly when I receive them. I am sure I have made some errors,and I am sure that I have missed some new events or have failed to find someold events which should be recorded. Please refer all such corrections andadditions to me at my new email address: PTheroff@kc.rr.com. The Online Gothais envisioned as a "Who's Who" among European royal families, showingwho the members are at present and in the recent past. I do not claim to be anexpert at the intricacies of various succession disputes, and do not intend theOnline Gotha to beany sort of arbiter or judge of who the rightful claimant might be in anyparticular dispute. Originally I intended to use a format which showedonly those members of families who are living today, plus enough of theirancestry to show relationships between closely related branches. This is theformat used in Genealogisches Handbuch des Adels and in the original Almanachde Gotha. However, I have decided to include all members of the families in thegenerations shown. In most families all generations since the beginning of theNineteenth Century are shown, though in some families the articles do not goback quite so far, and in some they go back considerably further. Within the individual articles I have chosen not toinclude all illegitimate issue, though I have included some. I have, however,included issue of morganatic marriages. These "morganauts" aregenerally shown in smaller font than the members not descended from morganaticmarriages. In some modern houses it is not easy to determine who should beconsidered morganatic. I apologize to any persons whom I thus havemisdesignated, and welcome further information about current morganatic statusof various members of the Houses. I have added descendants of female familymembers to many of the articles. Generally only the descendants of females ofthe most recent three or four generations are included. My main site, containing many of myfiles on individual families, as well as my file on the descendants of KingJames I of England,is still online. First, the Online Gotha is meant tocover European royalty and nobility; while it is true that the Imperial familyof Brazil isincluded, the fact is that that family would be included anyway as being partsof the French and Portuguese royal families. Second, I never had a really goodgenealogy of the Iturbide family.
