‘Any fool … can make a baby, but only a real man can raise his children’, says Furious in the 1991 film Boyz in the Hood. Children’s Protection Society CEO Bernadette Burchell echoes this sentiment: ‘Fathers are fathers for life, and being a good father or a bad father or an absent father will affect your child’s future. It is a job worth taking seriously and as early as possible.’

CPS helps out at Aboriginal Men’s Health Summit

CPS staff from the Sexual Abuse Counselling Prevention Program and Men and Fathers Support Program assisted the Central Australian Aboriginal Congress in facilitating a Children are our Future workshop in July,, 2008 with more than 400 Aboriginal men in The Northern Territory.
Bringing Books into Thomastown Children’s Lives

CPS staff worked with Arabic children and their families to pilot a literacy model at the Thomastown Library. The program ran over 10 weeks and focused on celebrating Arabic culture through art and literature.
Impressive Preston

Children from Preston, Preston East and Sacred Heart contributed to the Children’s Art Exhibition at CPS in May. The exhibition, ‘Impressive Preston’ was officially opened by Jane Redfern, Best Start Facilitator for the City of Darebin and more than 60 people attended this happy event.
National Child Protection Framework

Federal Minister for Families, Housing, Community and Indigenous Affairs and local MP member for Jagajaga, Jenny Macklin launched the National Child Protection Framework Discussion Paper at CPS in May, 2008. In her introduction the Minister paid tribute to the work of CPS as a community organisation in preventing child abuse and neglect and emphasised the importance of government and community partnership to attack this growing social problem.
