'Building a Better Airport' proposal advances to final Council vote

Added October 8th, 2008 The Transportation and Environment Committee of the San Jose City Council yesterday voted to send the 'Building a Better Airport' ordinance to the full body on October 21st. The ordinance, which will improve airport security by focusing on training and retaining skilled employees, is the result of an extensive period of discussion and input from a broad spectrum of the community. The process, led by Councilmember Forrest Williams and Vice Mayor Cortese, nears the end of a long journey that began with a press conference outside City Hall in April. At the committee meeting, Councilmembers heard testimony from a range of airport workers who advocated strongly for increased training and a living wage: two key steps toward assuring that the staff at the airport is ready in the event of an emergency. "Councilmember Williams says that we need to make sure there are no weak links in the chain," said airport employee Dwayne Green. "That's exactly right. And, especially when we’re talking about security and emergency capabilities, that chain becomes extremely important."Join us at the City Council meeting on October 28th [date changed at Rules Committee] to show your support for this policy and for the workers it impacts. Campaign update: Kickoff a huge success!

Added October 2nd, 2008 On September 20th, nearly 250 activists, community leaders and union members gathered at the Labor Council to launch critical races in the South Bay.Attendees heard about a number of key campaigns, including those profiled in the three articles below. After a brief program, teams of volunteers took to the streets to talk to voters, hear their concerns, and make the case for candidates and initiatives supported by progressives and working people. The national campaign is relying on grass-roots activism to advance a fifty-state strategy of engagement at all levels of government. Join us as we fight to make this vision of change from the grass roots up a reality.Volunteer schedule:Precinct walking - Saturday, 9 a.m.; Sunday, 11 a.m.Phone banking - Monday-Thursday, 5:30 p.m.; Sunday, 3 p.m.To get involved, call (408) 266-3790 or email organize@atwork.org. Campaign update: Rose Herrera for City Council

Added October 2nd, 2008 Rose Herrera is the candidate for San Jose City Council who will bring the values of working people to City Hall. A military veteran and business woman, she understands how to support us and help our families. She is in a tough race against an ideological Republican with no track record. Despite years of involvement in the community and engagement on issues of concern to her district (the Evergreen area), her opponent is self-funding a campaign that is effectively raising awareness of his candidacy. We have only one tool to fight back: feet in the street and people on the phone. We need your help to let people know that they should vote for good candidates all the way down the ballot - candidates like Rose Herrera. Campaign update: Dave Cortese for County Supervisor

Added October 2nd, 2008 The five Supervisors making decisions for the County of Santa Clara face a tough job: balancing the funding core services for the County's needy with a continually shrinking budget. The County is a huge, intricate system which cares for some of the most vulnerable residents of our area, and provides jobs for many of our working people. That's why Dave Cortese is the best candidate to step into the job. As a long-time leader in San Jose, Dave has demonstrated his ability to bring clear thinking and innovative solutions to problems similar to what the County now faces. And in the years he's been representing the City, working people have seen again and again that he always considers their needs and concerns. After finishing in first in the June primary, and now being endorsed by one of his two key rivals in that race, San Jose Vice Mayor Cortese is one step away from bringing that experience to the Board of Supervisors. Working people have endorsed his candidacy because we understand that, in a difficult time, we couldn't ask for a better champion. Campaign update: Measure A - Protecting medical services

Added October 2nd, 2008 Every day, thousands of patients come through Valley Medical Center. These are working people unable to afford health insurance, individuals seeking specialized treatment, or those unfortunate enough to need the County's only emergency trauma center after, for example, a life-threatening accident.Currently, the facility has just over five hundred beds - a strain, given the number of patients it treats. But, even more alarmingly, if the hospital is not made earthquake-safe, almost half of those beds will be unusable, crippling the Center's ability to treat the residents of Santa Clara County. This November, a measure on the County ballot, Measure A, will address this problem by generating sufficient revenue to make the facility earthquake-ready - preserving those much-needed beds, and in the catastrophic event of a major earthquake, the County's first line of defense.Measure A deserves - and needs - your support. Visit the campaign website at vmcmatters.org and volunteer your time to make sure it passes. SHARETHIS.addEntry({ title:'Campaign update: Measure A - Protecting medical services', url:'http://www.atwork.org/?show=92', summary:'Article from the South Bay Labor Council added on October 2nd, 2008' }, {button:true} ); Permalink  Comments

The campaign to change the valley and the country begins NOW!

Added September 16th, 2008 Saturday's 9 a.m. Campaign Kickoff at 2102 Almaden Road begins an election season packed with candidate and issue decisions at every level of government that are vital to working people and all progressive voters. There is nothing that better demonstrates the united power of our movement than precinct walks like Saturday's. Hundreds of activists taking to the streets, bringing a vision for change at every level of government is a unique experience for participants and voters alike.Technology continues to distance regular voters from the electoral process. Come out Saturday to knock on doors, talk to your neighbors, and let the Valley know where progressives stand on the issues and candidates. Precinct walking will be preceded by a rousing rally and breakfast. Lunch will be provided afterward.Take a united stand for change, from Washington to Sacramento to San Jose. Come out this Saturday, and help make our voices heard. Precinct walks will continue until Election Day on Saturdays at 9 a.m. and Sundays at 11 a.m. We also need phone banking volunteers to work at 5:30 p.m. Monday-Thursday and at 5 p.m. on Sundays.
