Child Policy Experts Answer Your Questions about Preventing Low Birth Weight Infants
Low birth weight (LBW) infants are those that are born weighing less than 5.5 pounds. Research shows that low birth weight infants face higher rates of infant mortality, developmental challenges, and long-term disabilities. The prevention of low birth weight infants is a serious public health challenge, and recent data suggest that the rate of LBW infants born in the United States has reached its highest level in almost 30 years. In this new Expert Perspectives feature, we invite you to ask three leading experts on child and maternal health your questions on the topic of preventing low birth weight.

Child-Parent Centers Continues to Show Proven Outcomes for Economically Disadvantaged Children
The Chicago Child-Parent Centers (CPCs) provide comprehensive educational support and family support to economically disadvantaged children and their parents. The guiding principle of the program is that by providing a school-based, stable learning environment during preschool in which parents are active and consistent participants in their child's education, scholastic success will follow. Rigorously-designed studies have followed a cohort of children through age nineteen. PPN's CPC program summary has recently been updated with results from the 19-year follow-up study. Among several positive findings, the study found improved high school completion rates and lower rates of arrests, convictions, and incarceration among program participants.

Research Shows Mixed Results When it Comes to Public Insurance and Children's Dental Health Care
Dental disease is the most common chronic childhood disease, and in recent years, concerns have been raised about the adequacy of dental care for low-income children. Two recent reports show mixed results with regards to the relationship between public insurance coverage and dental health care for children. A report released by Mathematica Policy Research, Inc., suggests that children participating in Healthy Kids programs in three different California counties experienced dramatic improvements in their access to and use of dental care. These children also experienced sharp reductions in their unmet need for dental services. However, a new report release by the U.S. Government Accountability Office (GAO) suggests that dental disease remains a significant problem for children enrolled in Medicaid. This report indicates that one third of children in Medicaid had untreated tooth decay, and one in nine had untreated decay in three or more teeth. The report also finds that children in Medicaid continue to experience higher risk of dental disease compared to children with private health insurance, with Medicaid children being almost twice as likely to have untreated tooth decay.
