Feuerbach wrote "The Essence of Christianity" in 1841
- and immediately attracted a great deal of negative attention for a
position which today would hardly cause a blink. He pointed out what
many Christian thinkers before him had asserted, that one cannot
describe
God in the same way that one describes one's dog or cousin. Human language will not fit
the task. More importantly, he gave good reasons for dismissing the
notion of the supernatural, upon which much traditional Christian
doctrine rests.
A
seldom-recognised difference lying behind much argument and
dissension between Christians is that some believe that Faith
is the basis upon which Christianity rests, while others
maintain that reason leads to the only faith worth having. It is
true to say that this hidden difference has resulted in a great
divide which separates one part of Christianity from another, a
separation which has little or nothing to do with denominations.
Richard Holloway,
former Anglican Primus of Scotland, has for many years pushed the
boundaries of traditional Christianity. He continues to do so in The
End of Religion. Could it be, he asks, that the particular way
of relating to the world we call religion will in the end cease to be?
At the very least, those who value religion should not be too
complacent.
