David Chalmers David Chalmers I am a philosopher at the Australian National University.Officially I am Professor of Philosophy, Director of the Centre for Consciousness, and an ARC Federation Fellow. I work in the philosophy of mind and in related areas ofphilosophy and cognitive science. I am especially interested inconsciousness, but am also interested in philosophical issues aboutmeaning and possibility, in the foundations of cognitive science andof physics, and a bunch of other things. This site includes quite a bit of my own work (e.g. papers on consciousness and papers on meaning and modality), and it also includes a numberof resources I've put together on topics related to consciousness and/orphilosophy: e.g., MindPapers (a bibliography), directories of online papers, and some philosophical diversions. There is also a photo gallery. A completemasterindex to this site's contents is available.WHAT'S NEW:MindPapers: A Bibliography of the Philosophy of Mind and the Science of ConsciousnessWeblog: Fragments of Consciousness.New papers: Ontological Anti-Realism, Propositions and Attitude Ascriptions: A Fregean Account, Ramsey + Moore = God.My workComplete list of papersPapers on consciousnessPaperson meaning and modalityPaperson AI and computationMiscellaneousbits and piecesOnlinediscussions of my workResponsesto articles on my workResourcesMindPapers: A bibliographyOnlinepapers on consciousnessPeoplewith online papers in philosophyWebresourcesGuideto the philosophy of mindPhilosophicalhumorZombieson the webBackground My undergraduate degree was in mathematics and computer science atthe University of Adelaide in Australia. I was a graduate student inmathematics for a while at the University of Oxford, but then Iswitched to Indiana University, where I obtained a Ph.D. in 1993 inPhilosophy and Cognitive Science, working in Doug Hofstadter's Center for Research on Conceptsand Cognition. I spent 1993-95 as a McDonnell Fellow in Philosophy, Neuroscience, and Psychology at Washington University in St. Louis, and 1995-98 in the Department ofPhilosophy at UC Santa Cruz. From 1999-2004 I was in theDepartment of Philosophy and theCenter for Consciousness Studies atthe University of Arizona. I moved to ANU in August 2004. A photogallery is here.Activities I seem to spend a lot of time organizing things (this is agood work-avoidance strategy). I'm strongly committed to getting aninterdisciplinary science of consciousness off the ground. I was one ofthe founders of the Association for the Scientific Studyof Consciousness (which has now had ten very successfulconferences), and I'm associate editor of PSYCHE, aninterdisciplinary e-journal on consciousness. I've helped organize thebiannual Tucsonconferences on consciousness. I also edit the philosophy of mindseries at Oxford University Press, and am philosophy of mind editorfor the StanfordEncyclopedia of Philosophy. Locally, I amdirector of the Centre for Consciousnessat ANU.ResearchWhen I have time and run out of excuses, I sometimes do some real work.I've written one book(below) and have been closely involved with another.I've written articles on consciousness, metaphysics and meaning,AI and computation, and various other topics in philosophy and cognitive science (see top of page). Consciousnessis my first love, and it's what I always come back to, but one of the nicethings about being a philosopher is that one is allowed to be interestedin all sorts of things. (If you get interested in X, you just say "I'mworking on the philosophy of X"). I do a lot of fairly technical philosophy(metaphysics, philosophy of language) as well as being closely involvedwith work in science - originally AI and physics, but lately more in neuroscienceand psychology. At themoment, I am working on a book on consciousness and on a book (or a series ofbooks) concerning the connections between reason, meaning, and possibility. TheConscious Mind: InSearch of a Fundamental Theory My book on consciousness was published in April 1996, with Oxford UniversityPress. Its web page has a few bits and pieces, such as the tableof contents, the introduction, some reviews, and other information. ExplainingConsciousness:The Hard ProblemThis collection (edited by Jonathan Shear) was publishedin 1997 by MIT Press. It has a keynotearticle by me, 26 responses from all sorts of perspectives, and myresponseto all these in turn. See its web page for contents. Philosophy of Mind: Classicaland Contemporary Readings This is an anthology of readings in the philosophy of mind, edited by me, andpublished by Oxford University Press in August 2002. Its web page has the table of contents and an ever growing list of typos.David Chalmers, Philosophy Program, RSSS, Canberra ACT 0200, Australia.
