Welcome to the Hymnary

The Hymnary is a new kind of hymn website. It combines the best features of popular sites like the Cyber Hymnal and academic projects like The Hymn Tune Index and rolls them all into one robust database.The Hymnary currently contains 36 hymnals, index entries on 28,668 texts (7,291 with full text)and 19,025 tunes, biographical information from sources such as the Psalter Hymnal Handbook and Julian's Dictionary of Hymnology, full scores of many public domain hymns, and 5,431 media files.The Hymnary will soon allow uploads, wikipedia-style user contributions and discussion groups. Future plans include a hymnal concordance (a la Google books), a "search my collection" feature, and support for publishers, authors and interest groups who want to utilize the database. Of course, we also plan to continue adding resources, refining search features andproof-reading existing material.The Hymnary is a project of the Christian Classics Ethereal Library and the Calvin Institute of Christian Worship, both located at Calvin College in Grand Rapids, MI. Harry Plantinga and Greg Scheer laid the foundation for the Hymnary in 2007. Currently, there are three computer programmers, two musicians, one librarian and an administrator spending time on the project. Volunteers also play a pivotal role. If you'd like to adopt a hymnal, proof-read existing information or provide feedback on user interface, we encourage you to contact us.
