Veljko Rogosic first to swim from Europe to Africa via Sicilia in July 2008
Veljko Rogošić, one of the most famous longdistance swimmers in history, swam from the island of Sicilia to Tunisia at the age of 67! He is thus the first human being to be able to connect Europe and Africa along this way. It took him 50 hours. This is one of the greatest achievements of Croatian sport in history. He is swimming under the motto "With sport against drugs!"

Croatian Heroes: Pavo Urban defended Dubrovnik with his camera
Pavo Urban was a young photographer. He lost his life in 1991 during Serbian and Montenegrin shelling and bombing of the city of Dubrovnik with his photo camera in hands. Marin Držić, a famous Croatian Renaissance playwright, was born five hundred years ago, in 1508. Ivo Karlović, Croatian tennis player known as The King of Aces, beat Roger Federer at Cincinnati Masters 2008, scoring 21 aces. He has the most devastating serve in ATP history. He is the tallest player ever on the ATP Tour at 208 cm (6 ft 10 in). In 2007 he finished the year with 1,318 aces, second all-time behind Goran Ivanišević, who hit 1,477 in 1996.

International Conference in honour of Josip Pecaric in Trogir, Croatia

Maxo Vanka, a famous Croatian painter
Maxo Vanka (Zagreb 1889 - Mexico 1963) created spectacular murals in the Croatian Catholic church of St. Nicholas in Pittsburgh, USA, in 1937. Tiny ceramics on show in Croatia reported by Chinese TV
More than 300 artists from 71 countries contributed to the Lilliput Exhibition of Ceramics in the town of Rovinj in Croatia. Judging by the number of countries it is the largest exhibition of ceramics in the world. In order to be entered, a sculpture must be less than 17 centimetres high and weigh less than a kilogram. The University of Oklahoma will conduct a year-long study on modernizing Croatia's weather service. A team from the school's Office of Weather Programs and Projects was chosen to undertake the $500,000 (€321,000) study to determine how to update the country's weather service infrastructure, which is left over from the Soviet era.

Leo Anthony Majich, age 82, was born July 17, 1925 in Los Angeles and died April 10, 2008 in Pasadena after a brief illness. He was a founding member of the Croatian American Association as well as the National Federation of Croatian Americans, serving several terms as its Western Region vice-president.

Swimming success of Croatia at European championship in 2008
Gordan Kožulj, Vanja Rogulj, Mario Todorović and Duje Draganja won silver medals in men's 100m medley relay at the European Swimming Championships in the Netherlands. Sanja Jovanović won bronze medal in women's 50m backstroke, and Duje Draganje silver medal in 50m freestyle.

Mother Teresa and Croatians
The Croatian Jesuits had a great role in spiritual development of Mother Teresa in her youth. Her spiritual father was Fr. Franjo Jambreković. The first monument in the world honouring this famous Albanian woman was carved in Croatia, in Supetar on the island of Brac (2002), by Petar Jakšić. It was unveiled by Martin Sheen.
