St. Ambrose c. 339-397

St. Ambrose was born about the year 339 at Augusta Treverorum-the modern Trier. His father was Aurelius Ambrosius, prefect of the Gauls, and he belonged to the senatorial aristocracy. He was educated at Rome and entered the imperial service about 365. He was appointed governor of the provinces of Aemilia and Liguria about 371. His headquarters were at Mediolanum, the present Milan, and he was elected bishop there in the early winter of 373. As governor, he had gone to the assembly where the voting would take place to pacify a dispute between the candidates, and he was quite unprepared for the enthusiastic cry of 'Let Ambrose be bishop' which greeted his efforts at mediation. Though his family was Christian, he had not yet been baptized, but he was christened on November 24th, ordained priest and consecrated bishop on December 1st. He held the see of Milan till his death on April 4th, 397. During most of his episcopate Milan was the capital of the western Empire, and he was the friend and counsellor of three very different emperors-Gratian, the boy Valentian and the great Theodosius, whom he once rebuked for presuming to enter the sanctuary during mass. 'The Emperor is in the church,' Theodosius was told, 'not over it.' Ambrose seems to have realized that the Roman world was plunging into darkness; within a few years of his death all the western provinces were over-run by the barbarians. More than any other man he handed on to the middle ages the legacy of Rome; the conception of objective justice and of law, the sense of the responsibility of office, pride in integrity and in unbroken dignity. He christened Seneca and Cicero in his De Officiis and made their teaching part of the medieval heritage. His life had as lasting an influence as his writings, and although he has been compared with St Augustine and St Jerome, his vocation was pastoral rather than literary. He introduced the eastern custom of singing hymns into the western church, and he is perhaps better remembered for his hymns, such as Aeterne Rerum Conditor and Veni Redemptor Omnium, than for his more elaborate treatises on virginity (De Virginibus) and on faith (De Fide). And it is as a devoted pastor to his flock that he is seen by his greatest convert, Augustine, who sought baptism from him in 387. Consciously a Roman of senatorial rank, consciously the bishop of a great see, unconsciously a saint, Ambrose set an example that was never forgotten. He was a Father as well as a Shepherd, serenely and fearlessly independent of the state, the champion of the oppressed, a 'Christian Consul.'
