Australia's Most Adventurous Senior - 2008
Submitted by rlewis on 29 September, 2008 - 10:20.
This is not Brian! AUSTRALIA’S MOST ADVENTUROUS SENIOR ANNOUNCED IN NATIONAL AWARDS The official Seniors Card travel and lifestyle magazine, Get Up & Go has awarded Brian Eldridge of Wauchope, New South Wales, 2008’s title of Australia’s Senior with the Most Get Up and Go. After a nationwide search, Brian proved the most deserving of this year’s award.Brian is one of the nation’s great band of volunteers and he was chosen for his zest for life, humanitarian instincts and sense of adventure. At the age of 64, Brian was made redundant from his job and directed to do two days a week volunteer work if he was to receive the Newstart Allowance. This was all it took to inspire Brian and his wife Wynne to join the world of travelling and volunteering. Since then, Brian and Wynne have travelled and worked in NSW with Conservation Volunteers Australia; joined a volunteer mission building team in Papua New Guinea: and has travelled and camped out through much of Outback Australia. Click here for more on Brian and his wife's activities.

Older peoples voices
Submitted by rlewis on 9 September, 2008 - 13:16.
All in all, I find most of us an apathetic lot when it comes to voicing an opinion in any public forum. So, it's a nice change to hear from the Act Your (R)Age-Seniors theatre group in Tasmania. They raise seniors issues through acting, and are seeking to make contact with others of similar interest elsewhere. If you do have such an interest do make contact with them. Click here for a link to a PDF document on what they are about . If you have an opinion, do find voice and blog it to me via a comment below

Unemployed aged workers and re-training
Submitted by rlewis on 21 August, 2008 - 14:15.
It is apparent that the Government is moving towards seeking increased workplace participation by the 55 and older, unemployed. This implies some tightening of current benefit conditions, and clearly, with the rapidly changing nature of work these days, some thoughtful re-training will be required. I say thoughtful, as seniors, by the very nature of the ageing process, do learn differently from the young. Faster in some areas, slower in others, and via more hands on and group processes. As such we will need a new national programme delivery that will be based both on emerging job type vacancies suitable for the 55+, and our capacity to learn the required new skills, at the right pace. Most people will welcome the opportunity for gainful employment, the sense of self worth that it brings, and the increased income that follows.Your ideas on such re-training would be most welcome and we will pass them on to the Departmentconcerned.

Elder Abuse
Submitted by rlewis on 4 August, 2008 - 14:54.
Elder Abuse is a complex and many faceted major problem in our society, and one whose incidence is still being assessed. It is being belatedly tackled, and sadly, it seems that it may well rival the incidence of child abuse. We had a lot to do with the establishment of the Elder Abuse Prevention Association, [EAPA] which is now about to hold its 4th Annual three day seminar in Melbourne [1st to the 3rd of October]. Details of this informative and excellent networking seminar [and its registration details], can be found by clicking here

Financing Retirement
Submitted by rlewis on 31 July, 2008 - 09:43.
Living longer in an increasingly expensive world, brings with it challenges for most of us. Financing our retirement usually gets harder as our savings get used up. While our consumption of goods declines, health costs rise as also does home maintenance. If we want to maintain our general standard of living, home owners have many strategies for dealing with these problems. Selling down is a common one. The position of renters is much harder. This UK web site is free and carries a lot of good ideas that you might find to be of interest.

Food Security
Submitted by rlewis on 11 July, 2008 - 08:53.
The term 'food security' is beginning to apply to seniors and the disabled and their access to food. Many seniors become housebound or are without a driving license and are dependent upon public transport to get to the shops. Issues such as the lack of such public transport, dental problems, lack of money, family or neighbourly support, and more, can lead to malnutrition and other illness, [and also being taken advantage of].Increasingly too, the rising costs of living and expected food group shortages, mean that growing food at home is becoming an important budget support item. With the above problems in mind, we have begun building a new free course for the Lyceum, called Growing Food at Home. We hope to be able to provide a practical nutrition plan, and a back yard garden approach, where you will get "The best bang for your buck!"To make this course more tangible, I am seeking to illustrate it with personal garden images. If you have such or some useful tips, do mail greypath
