Students Stage Munster March Against Fees 9 October 2008 Thousands of students are taking to the streets of Cork city today to demonstrate their anger at the Minister for Education and Science, Batt O’ Keeffe’s proposals to reintroduce third level tuition fees. Students will assemble at 12 pm in UCC and then proceed to march into Cork city where they will take to the streets to highlight their strong opposition to Minister O’ Keeffe’s proposed plans regarding third level funding in Ireland. This protest will signal a clear message to the Minister, that students will not stand for any re-introduction of third level fees or indeed any other attempt at introducing fees via a back door system. USI President Shane Kelly has said, " The Minister has signalled his intent to heap further financial pressure on families already struggling with the cost of college. Not only would the return of fees be a disaster for students and their families, but it would put at risk the very idea of our knowledge economy by placing a barrier in front of those wishing to further their education.” Regarding the recent reports of a potential increase in college registration fees, “This represents the most cynical move by a Minister for Education and Science in my life time. We constantly hear the Minister say he wants to start a debate on third level funding, but this latest move demonstrates that he is not interested in a debate, nor is he interested in making sure that everyone with the potential to go to college can fulfil that potential. This latest hypocrisy by the Minister will only serve to make it harder for those families already struggling to meet the costs of third level. The Minister now wants to pick the pockets of those families and students already struggling and use them as scapegoats for decades of under investment”.
