Churchmouse: Cast Iron Grave Markers.Cast Iron Grave Markers// This page is not complete UK Cast Iron Gravemarkers My collection of photographs of cast iron gravemarkers is too large to be put on the web at present, but as Free Web Space becomes available, we are uploading portions of it.I am toying with the idea of producing a CD-ROM of them in HTML format. Meanwhile this page is an excerpt from an electronic document I am currently constructing. Take this link to the start of the main United Kingdom collection which should include some two hundred-odd photographs within a couple of weeks of the document modified date. Take this link to the start of the Australian photographic collection. Australian Cast Iron Gravemarkers Each time I visit a church I not only lookaround the inside for monuments and stained glass, but I alwayslook around the churchyard too, particularly in the oldersections. I check in the long rough grass areas and under bushesas I look for the unusual and for the famous. My searches do notend there however because there are a couple of particularmarkers which I seek out. These are usually markers recording the lives of the commonfolk of the parish. I seek out any Grimsleysof Oxford which are usually signed and are a type ofartificial "Terra Cotta". Not the usual Red Plant potstuff but a very delicate shade of pink.I also look for any grave markers (Gravestones to you) made ofCast Iron from various foundries. The latter, which this articleis about are found in a scattering of British Churchyards and asfar away as South Africa and South Australia and some of theseare British made or copied from British Samples. At one time there were many different foundries producing CastIron markers but I have only heard of one in Norfolk now with thepatterns to make one. The examples illustrated here all have atale to tell but the clues do not always give enough informationto get the name of manufacturer or for social history purposes. As you look through them I will have recorded the name and anydetails of the deceased and any other relevant information whichis to hand.Lincolnshire Cast IronGravemarkersLincolnshire has very few samples of ordinary simple crossmarkers in its churchyards but what it lacks in quantity it makesup for in quality. UK40.St Julians Church. Benniworth. Lincolnshire. Standing Loose in the churchyard there is a cast iron circle cross complete with a cross base to prevent it being lifted out of the ground. No Inscription. UK34, UK35.St Nicholas Church. Fulbeck. Lincolnshire. Cast Iron round headed marker with cross forming the centre of the head and IHS in the very centre of the cross. Cast mark on the back. Haden. Warminster(?) and Royal coat of arms(?) UK36.Also St Nicholas Church. Fulbeck. Lincolnshire. Unusual framed "Ribbon with cross at the top. Similar IHS to UK34. (Haden?) This marker was missing when the church was revisited Saturday 3-Jun-2000. UK41.Church of St John The Evangelist. Corby Glen. Lincolnshire. Large broad round headed Cast Iron Marker painted black with gold letters IN MEMORY OFGEORGE KELLAM BIRD WHO DIED OCT 30TH 1885 AGED 65 YEARS UK135.Canwick Road Cemetery, Canwick Road, Lincoln. Photo taken approx 1990; this gravemarker is now more damaged than shown here. UK110.The Church of The Holy Trinity, Old Clee, near Grimsby, Lincolnshire. Direction? What Direction? This page is not complete, and to be honest we're not reallysure where it's going. I have more photographs of cast irongravemarkers than I can presently publish. Perhaps I will compilea software publication, say in HTML (web) format, and publish itto interested parties on CD-Rom. As cheap webspace becomesavailable we are making a start of publishing it on-line.Hopefully it can be displayed with some kind of search ability, any suggestions or help in that area would be appreciated. If you know of the location of any cast iron grave markers Iwould be pleased to hear from you, I am mainly interested in UKmemorials, but I have found some abroad (particularly Australia),so feel free to contribute wherever you are from. Please mail meat: peter@churchmousewebsite.co.uk Right: Drawing taken from the loose marker at St. JuliansChurch, Benniworth. This type can be found repeatedly inLincolnshire, both with and without cast inscription, but bearsno makers mark. This site is a work in progress. Back to the Main Page. |
