João Pedro de Magalhães: Science, Thoughts, and Dreams of the Future  Latest news: In my latest paper, "Analyses of human-chimpanzee orthologous gene pairs to explore evolutionary hypotheses of aging," I investigate the rate of evolution of aging-associated genes since humans and chimpanzees diverged to gather clues about the mechanisms responsible for the evolution of longevity in the human lineage. In another recent paper, "An analysis of the relationship between metabolism, developmental schedules, and longevity using phylogenetic independent contrasts," I show that metabolic rates do not correlate with longevity, yet growth rates and developmental schedules are strongly associated with adult lifespan.  Welcome to my personal website! My name is João Pedro de Magalhães and I'm a researcher working on aging. I'm a scientist and philosopher, a dreamer, and a transhumanist. In addition, I compose music and perform stand-up comedy. Some of my other hobbies include science fiction, football, and computers. Presently, I'm a postdoctoral fellow in the Church lab at Harvard Medical School in Boston, though I expect to move to the UK later in 2008 to develop my own group. The human condition is only the beginning of the extraordinary journey of the mind through the universe.
