INKPOT#56 CLASSICAL MUSIC REVIEWS: CSÁRDÁS - Hungarian Gypsy Music (Naxos) CSÁRDÁS - Hungarian Gypsy Music Ferenc Sánta and his Gypsy BandNAXOS 8.550954[59'10"] budget-priceby Derek LimHave you ever been entranced by gypsy music? Ever since I heard Sarasate's Zigeunerweisen, I have. This disc featuring Ferenc Sánta and hisGypsy Band is a compilation of gypsy (or "Romany" as the gypsies are wont tocall themselves) pieces. These wandering people (hence "gypsies"), besidestheir reputation as a hot-blooded and rash people, are also well-known as a"race" of extremely talented musicians. Sadly the music of this people hasbeen neglected as they have always been looked down upon as thieves and bandits, a point which is unfortunately undeniable, thoughover-emphasized. In Germany, for example, they have never been accepted, andare to this day treated as third- or fourth- class citizens, Ausländer. Most of the pieces here have not been recorded before, and Isuspect that many of these are not written down in score. This disc enablesthis wonderful music to be heard without having to buy anair-ticket to Hungary. A lot of music by many famouscomposers is based on the tradition of Romany music, especially the music of Bartok (nearly his entire output) and Liszt (try his HungarianRhapsodies) . Brahms also contributed with hisfamous Hungarian Dances (Naxos 8.550110). We can well see the origin of some of thesemasterpieces when we listen to these pieces on the disc. The gypsy band is apparently the mainstay and one of the most importantcomponents of a gypsy tribe. From very young, the gypsy children are placedin the band, and a violin stuck under their chin. They have no pedagogy, but the results are nevertheless outstanding. Georges Enesco (1881-1955, also spelt Enescu), Menuhin'steacher was trained in such a tradition - his playing is described as oneof the most fiery ever. Unfortunately the extant recordings we have of hisplaying do not reflect him at his best. Listening to Ferenc Sánta'splaying, one perhaps has some idea of the glory of Enesco's skills.Bornin 1945 in Kaposvár, Sánta was trained at the Music Academy and has played indifferent symphony orchestras. Hence his wonderful technique - despite hisclassical training he has lost none of the excitability that makesgyspy music alive. His playing is truly virtuostic -- listening to it onecan imagine the Paganini tradition of virtuoso playing -- the dare-devilnessof the Caprices finds its echo in this gypsy music. Even if one can'tappreciate the music (and it would take a really conservative person not to)one can certainly enjoy the display technique. His spiccato is very good andhis ricochet bowing and artificial harmonic portamenti are to die for, andmostly unlearnable, according to a friend of mine who listened to this CD (hehas played the Sibelius Concerto)Of all the pieces on the disc, half are Csárdás and most of the other halfHungarian Songs. Monti's most famous encore piece Csárdás is included hereand played wonderfully to best effect. Dinicu, one of whose compositionsthe violinist Jascha Heifetz later revived as the very popular HoraStaccato, is represented here by his Skylark -- a piece often imitated onvarious instruments, including Chinese instruments such as the gaohu andbanhu. This piece imitates various birds. When hearing this one isreminded of the reports of Paganini's imitation of chickens and otherfarmyard animals. Surely this must have been what it may have sounded like. Right: Detail from "Les Tsiganes" by Adrien Moreau, 1877The gypsy band itself offers accompaniment, even though it is by no meansthe most sympathatic -- in fact ensemble often breaks down -- the playersobviously have fun playing and they are clearly virtuoso players in theirown right. A lot of the playing is very spontaneous -- the musicians seem to be "jamming" all the way, taking turns to play the oomh-paa parts. Theinstruments of the band are themselves of considerable interest -- besidesthe violin, most of them are rarely seen. The tárogató, an instrument similar in timbre to that of the clarinet, provides much colour, in parts making everything sound very traditionalRussian. The cimbalon, or dulcimer has a solo piece on this disc, theDoïna and Hora, which shows off the players own fantastic technique. Thecimbalon has never had a place in the western orchestra, but it finds itsequivalent in the Chinese Orchestra as the yangqin. Overall I find I likethe more mellow and less jarring sound of the yangqin a lot more. In fact Iplan to transcribe this (with time) for yangqin and I am curious at theresults. This disc was recorded in a single day(!) at the Festetich Castle, Budapestwith an apparently all-Hungarian team of producers and engineer. Satisfyingsound, though sometimes too close. It's admittedly very difficult tobalance a piece with no score at all and to this end, the engineer GáborMocsáry does an admirable job. There are some notes in this release, though not very comprehensive. One wishes though that they could haveinserted also some pictures of the gypsy band, and their instruments. Alsothe names of the band players could have been included, since Ferenc Sántadoes not play in every single piece. But these are the only gripes I guess.Seldom have I found a disc so satisfying -- even if it were to retail it at full-price it would still be very worth the buy. With Naxos CDsfirmly in the bargain price bracket, this disc is warmly recommended toanyone who has had more than a passing interest in the traditional gypsymusic as played on "authentic instruments". If you are in Singapore, this disc can be ordered easily from Sing Discs (Raffles City), Tower Records (Pacific Plaza & Suntec City), Borders (Wheelock Place) or HMV (The Heeren).Derek Lim is into all things gypsy and traditional.Back to the Classical Index!... or read more classical music reviews from the Inkvault archives!222: 28.6.98 ©Derek LimReaders' Comments

You publicly state that it is undeniably true that Roma have been thieves in the past, but has this not also the perception of other races. In 18th century Victorian England, many Jews were perceived as being of the criminal classes, evidence of this can be seen in the work of the great writer Charles Dickens in his portrayal of Fagin the Jew. In his own period Dickens came under heavy criticism for such a portrayal and defended himself by saying all he was doing was portraying the truth at the time as perceved by the majority of middle-class English people.
I point out to you that the majority of the Roma people are sedentary, honest people, and that a only a small percentage are still nomads ; but even as nomads there are many that go out of thier way to do good works. i.e. Feeding the homeless Gajo (Non-Gypsies).
Mr Santa's Gypsy band represents an important Gypsy tradition,as does my own Gypsy band, The Boros Gypsy Ensemble located in London, that goes back to the primas Cinka Panna, personal Gypsy violinist to Prince Eszterhazy, at the same time that Haydn also served Prince Eszterhazy. A tradition that has had an important effect upon European violin tradition, as you your self also reflect upon.
The Roma Nation should be proud of itself, and one of the things it can be proud of is it's contribution to European musical culture.
I point out to you that Adolf Hitler had the sentiments that the Roma nation were useless to Europe (theives, vagabonds, etc.)and that they should not only be institutionally excluded fron society, but that Europe should be ethnically cleansed of them. Thus one and a half million were murdered in gas chambers.
Surely some of the points I have raised could also have found some expression in your article.
Yours sincerly,
Gabor Boros
Double-bass player of the Boros Gypsy Ensemble.

Dear Mr Boros, Thank you very much for your comments. Please be rest assured that
I have no intention of denigrating your race, or casting it in a bad light.
My phrasing of this sentence, perhaps was unfortunate:
Sadly the music of this people has been neglected as they have always been
looked down upon as thieves and bandits, a point which is unfortunately
undeniable, though over-emphasized.
What I meant to say was that the doings of some of the people have lead to
the gypsies in general being perceived as thieves and bandits, a reputation
which has unfortunately obscured more positive traits, such as the innate
musicality of the Roma people. I am sorry for any unhappiness this may have
caused you and your friends, and I would like to wish the Boros Gypsy Ensemble
every success.
