Review of LLB Curriculum
Professor Angelo Pantazis, Head of the Wits School of Law and Nic Swart, a member of the task team.
The South African Law Deans’ Association has appointed a task team to make recommendations to it
on the reform of the LLB curriculum. The current LLB at South African universities is registered
with the South African Qualifications’ Authority (SAQA) until January 2010 and registration will
be renewed. The task team (under the chairpersonship of Professor Lesley Greenbaum from the
University of KwaZulu-Natal) met at Wits School of Law to discuss the controversial and exciting
issue with Graeme Stickells from SAQA and Nic Swart, Director of Legal Education and Development
in the Law Society of South Africa. Law Schools are facing criticism for the quality of their
graduates by employers and legal curricula have to adapt to the needs of our rapidly changing
society. The Wits School of Law will be conducting a survey of its alumni and their perspectives
on their legal education. Existing evidence shows that most law graduates do not become or remain
practising lawyers. There is greater pressure to teach students basic legal skills as well as
general life skills in order better to equip them for the variety of work opportunities and to
make up for the shortfall of poor school education.

Webber Wentzel has generously contributed R300 000 this year towards the School of Law’s Capital Campaign.
At a cocktail function held in late June, David Lancaster, Senior Partner, spoke warmly of the long standing relationship between the firm and the School and of their ongoing commitment to the School’s development. Attending the function at Webber Wentzel’s were many alumni of the School who are professionals working at the firm, some of whom are active participants in the teaching programme at the School, and School of Law staff.
