As the Dean of Law at Macquarie may I welcome you to the Macquarie Law
website.
Macquarie Law was established in 1972 as Sydney's third law school admitting
our first students in 1975. From the outset the school marked itself out
through its emphasis on the interdisciplinary study of law taught by the Department of Law and the Department
of Environmental Law. This is still the hallmark of Macquarie Law's
LLB programs today. In 1999 the school was joined by the Department
of Business Law in the creation of the Division of Law. This department
teaches into a range of degree programs.
The past five years have been characterized by a strong growth in the research culture in the Division as well as the forging of strong links with the legal profession. We have a new CORE (Concentration of Research Excellence) with strengths in legal governance and regulatory problems facing governments, businesses, and communities in the new world order, including global and national governance, environmental sustainability, corporate social responsibility, and the medico-legal challenges of human health. Our Legal Governance CORE builds upon the expertise of Macquarie Law’s established reputation for cross-disciplinary research in the fields of international, public, and private law. Our research reaches out to the legal profession, business, governments, and NGOs requiring expertise in legal governance in Australia and worldwide.
The Division's Centre for Environmental Law (MU-CEL) is a teaching and research centre of excellence focusing on international, comparative and national environmental law, climate change, biodiversity, marine law and oceans governance, planning and local government law, pollution law, corporate environmental law, Indigenous peoples and environmental rights, trade and environment, and environmental litigation and mediation.
The Centre for Comparative Law, History and Governance (CCLHG) is a world-class cross-disciplinary Macquarie University Research Centre specialising in how the legal and social history of Australia and other common law countries informs their present social policy and regulation and their future governance needs.
The Law and Property Rights Research Centre is comprised of researchers located in the Division of Law. Together with researchers from other disciplines at Macquarie University and research associates from a consortium of international universities, they are dedicated to the study of the relationship between law and property rights.
Our Visiting Professors program has included top international scholars as well as leaders of the Judiciary in New South Wales. The Division is now home to four refereed scholarly journals. The wide range of senior LLB electives now includes two clinical units (with Macquarie Legal Centre and the Public Interest Advocacy Centre) and several mooting units, in both domestic and international mooting competitions, with the Trevor Martin Moot Court and the Blackshield Room being the sites of great activity all year round.
Macquarie Law staff live in a very 1960s building with Escher-like corridors,
with windows facing out onto the broad landscape of the Macquarie campus.
