While planning for this event, the DCC board and standing committees have come to realize that any of those who are currently involved in supporting and guiding the DCC are senior citizens, and that in order to keep the DCC's legacy alive in the future, it is very important for younger generations to become more actively involved in DCC operations such as outreach, education and cultural functions in the Deaf community. For those who are interested in learning more about how they can become involved with the DCC, a meeting will be held at the DCC at 7:00 p.m. on Friday, August 5, 2005. There will be a presentation to educate the audience about the DCC's mission, and then we will have a group discussion to brainstorm ideas for how we can all become involved and show our support. The NAD has chosen "Cherish, Celebrate and Commit" as its anniversary theme, said president Andrew Lange, because "We cherish the past, celebrate the present and commit to the future." The NAD plans to focus its fundraising efforts on establishing a development office to ensure a strong financial future for the association. "We have much to celebrate and cherish," said CEO Nancy Bloch, "and at the same time we must commit to making America an even better place for current and future generations." ------------------------------------------------------------------ KAD CONFERENCE REPORT Kansas Association of the Deaf (KAD) Conference went very well at Kansas School for the Deaf during the weekend of July 21st to 23rd, 2005. KAD members voted to give a total of $1,250 to NAD 125th Anniversary Celebration project! The next KAD conference will be held in a salt mine 600 feet below ground level in Hutchinson in 2007! It may be called the "KAD Salt Mine Conference!" KAD has 511 members and 125 people attended the KAD conference. KAD has over 600 email addresses for KAD internet newsletter. On Thursday, KAD hosted its first ever Professional Workshop that included ten topics and speakers on: * Open Forum - Draft Regulations of Sign Language Interpreter - Rebecca Rosenthal, KCDHH * Educational Interpreter Guidelines - Melanie Cody, KSDE * IDEA - 2004 and other IDEA Issue - Mark Ward - KSDE * Bi-Lingual Deaf Education - Dr Petra Horn & Kester Marsh, KSD * Don't Shoot Me! On Friday, KAD held its Opening Ceremony that included outstanding presentations given by NAD VP Mark Apodaca ("NAD - F-3"), F-3 Structure Chairperson Rebecca Rosenthal and NAD Board Member Jack Cooper ("Leadership from Within"). Special announcements were made about the deaf youth programs sponsored by KAD and awards received by the deaf youths at these programs (see newspaper story below). On Friday night, the host, Kansas School for the Deaf Alumni Association (KSDAA), provided a night of entertainment. On Saturday, KAD hosted the Parent Program. At the KAD general business meeting, KAD members voted to give NAD $1,250 for the 125th Anniversary Celebration project. Several other members also gave pledges for the project. CSD-VRS gave an interesting program on VRS. The following officers were elected for 2005-2007: President - Leonard Hall (Olathe) 1st Vice President - Kevin Milner (Olathe) * 2nd Vice President - Shane Dundas (Wichita) * Secretary - Ann Cooper (Gardner) * Treasurer - Mike Muszynski (Olathe) Board member for membership - Glenda Haefner * Board member for Newsletter - Rosetta Duren State Pagent Director - Tammy Waddell * President Emeritus - Jack Cooper Delegate at Large - Mary Hughes 2007 KAD Chairperson - Mike Flickinger * newly elected KAD presented the following awards (see newspaper story below about the awards): 2005 KAD Distinguished Service Award - State Rep. At the Saturday night banquet, NAD VP Mark Apodaca was a wonderful guest speaker and his speech is "You Are Lucky to Have NAD!" Mark will put his speech on the NAD webpage site. After the banquet, the members enjoyed "prom night" at KSD. KSDAA held its picnic on Sunday. KAD will be sending 6 delegates, its Jr. KAD Sponsor, and several deaf youths from KSD to the upcoming NAD Region II conference to be held in Omaha in November 2005. The following is a newspaper article that appeared in the Olathe News on Thursday, July 28th and will appear in the upcoming USA-L deaf internet news. (The only state association that has a newspaper story written about its conference!) Kansas Deaf Conference in OlatheBy Leonard Hall Kansas Association of the Deaf (KAD) wrapped up its biennial state conference at KSD last weekend. The conference lasted four days, as members, officers, and committees met numerous times to focus on issues and activities for deaf people over the next two years.+ The biggest new is that the next KAD Conference will be held in the salt mines 600 feet underground in Hutchinson, Kansas in June 2007. After meeting in 100 degrees weather for four days at KSD, everyone is ready for a cooler conference in 2007! The highlight of the KAD conference was the reports from youth sponsors about our deaf youths obtaining top honors at camps this summer. KAD provided funds for a number of deaf students to attend Youth Leadership Camp (YLC), Close-Up Program (Washington D.C.), and other similar camps across the county. At the YLC, one KSD graduate, Mike Harper, obtained the honor of being Mr. YLC for his outstanding leadership displayed among the deaf high school students. Several KSD students obtained awards and honors in the month-long youth camp. The upcoming Miss Deaf Kansas Pageant involving several young deaf women will be held at KSD in October. KAD is a big supporter of deaf youths in Kansas. KAD members voted to give KSD $1,000 for a new black background set for the stage at Murphy Auditorium. Murphy Auditorium at KSD is a time replica. Several photographs of a KAD conference at KSD in the 1920s show identical seats and auditorium background as they stand today. It was historical moment to have the KAD business meeting held in Murphy Auditorium. From 1909 to 1950s, KAD have held its conference at KSD almost every 6 years. Back in those days, there was no air conditioning at KSD. There were no computer, power point projector, and overhead projector available more than 50 years ago. Another highlight is that KAD has over 500 members across Kansas. It is one of the largest state associations of the deaf in the Midwest. KAD gave its Most Distinguished Award to Rep. Arlen Siegfreid for his outstanding contribution to KSD and the deaf people across Kansas. It was the first time ever that KAD gave an award to a legislator. It was through Siegfreid's effort that KSD teachers were given approximately 10% increase in salary each year over the past two years to reach the same pay level as teachers from the public school districts. KAD gave its Special Recognition Award to Mitch Bartlett for his outstanding works in organizing Deaf KC Royals Night for two years in a row and to Lorrie Shank for her works on many committees. Mary Hughes was given the Meritorious Award for her outstanding contribution to KAD while serving as chairperson of the KAD Host Committee for the 2004 NAD Conference. It was another great conference for deaf people in Kansas.-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- AOL POLICY - Please let me know when you change email address by sending me your new email address.
