Illegals vs. American taxpayers
The Washington TimesBy Deborah SimmonsMore than a few pundits and commentators have called the Oct. 7 debate between Sen. John McCain and Sen. Barack Obama a snoozer because the two candidates didn't go at each other. Whether you concur or not with their assessment, one thing is certain, the candidates are not being grilled on the issue of illegal immigration and its inextricable link to our economic well-being and our national security.Exhibit A is a violent snapshot from Mr. McCain's home county, Maricopa County, Ariz. It unveils, in brutally honest facts and candid law-enforcement comments, what happens when sanctuary and amnesty policies tied the hands of law enforcers in Phoenix.Phoenix police reported more than 350 extortion-related kidnappings in 2007 and the city is now known as America's "kidnap capital." A special unit trying to arrest the problem is also grappling with something dubbed "virtual kidnapping," whereby a criminal claims it has kidnapped a relative, friend or associate of another criminal and threatens physical harm if that other criminal fails to pay a ransom. The ransoms range from $50,000 to $1 million."Phoenix is ground zero for illegal narcotics and illegal human smuggling in the United States, Phoenix Detective Phil Roberts says. "There's a lot of illegal cash out there in the valley, and a lot of people want to get their hands on it." full story

Drilling bill clears House, but unlikely to pass Senate (DEMOCRATS FAUX DRILL BILL)
The Virginian-PilotA sharply divided House of Representatives agreed Tuesday to open millions of acres off the nation’s coastlines to oil and natural gas production but set conditions that could to keep much of that seabed free from drilling.--snip--A buffer zone extending 50 miles from the coast would remain off-limits, however. --snip--Because the House bill cuts Virginia and other states out of any share of royalties that companies would pay on oil and gas produced offshore, even drilling supporters doubt that their states will agree to drilling.“Virginia gets zero… The effect of this legislation will be that none of these coastal states will allow drilling,” said Rep. Thelma Drake, a Norfolk Republican. The bill “is not only a hoax, it is cruel,” she said.--snip--Republicans dismissed the measure as a sham, drafted to give the majority party political cover from voter outrage over gasoline prices that topped $4 per gallon this summer. Close to 90 percent of the 18 billion barrels of oil thought to lie off the nation’s coasts is believed to be within the 50-mile buffer, they said.Other Republicans complained that the bill would do nothing to promote the use of coal and nuclear energy, sources they said could be developed quickly. And the plan was drafted by the majority in secret and rammed through the House before most members even had a chance to read it, they contend.full story

House Passes Backroom Energy Bill (Democrats’ position shifted from “drill nothing” to “drill almost-nothing”)
humanevents.comDemocrats introduced a 290-page energy bill at 9:45 p.m. Monday night which passed 236-189 Tuesday evening -- just over 24 hours after the bill was filed. The bill reportedly did not go through any committees or subcommittees, and Democratic leaders are not allowing a single amendment to be offered. If passed by both houses, the bill would keep 80 percent to 88 percent of known domestic reserves permanently off limits. States would not receive any revenue by allowing offshore drilling, and electricity costs would increase and potentially double in certain states, Republican opponents say. There would be no drilling allowed less than 50 miles offshore -- where experts predict 80 percent to 88 percent of America’s domestic reserves are located.full story

Hialeah, FLORIDA: 99-Year Old Woman Among Rapist's Victims, Second Victim Was 81-Years Old
cbs4.comHIALEAH, Florida -- A Hialeah man has been denied bond for a horrific and heinous crime against two elderly women, ages 99- and 81-years old. Jose Corrales, 33, appeared in bond court Friday, charged with two counts of sexual battery, two counts of kidnapping and two counts of occupied burglary with battery.According to detectives, the first incident occurred in Hialeah on June 22nd, when Corrales, an illegal alien working as a roofer, spotted the 99-year old woman while she was taking out her trash. Police say he had a brief conversation with her then followed her back to the front door and forced his way in.The frail 99-year old woman attempted to fight back but was simply overpowered. Police say he pushed her to the ground with such force, that her dentures flew across the room. She pleaded for her life as she was slapped and punched in the stomach, face, legs, arms and back, according to the police report. Eventually, she was grabbed by the neck and dragged into her bedroom where, police say, Corrales forced her to perform oral sex.The second incident also occurred in Hialeah, but took place two months later on August 24th.The victim in this case was an 81-year old handicapped woman with limited mobility. She was sitting inside her home when Corrales stood at her doorway, commented how hot it was outside and removed his shirt. Speaking in Spanish, the 81-year-old woman told CBS4 Reporter Jorge Estevez how she did not lock her door in time, and he made his way inside and forced her to perform oral sex. Corrales was captured after DNA taken at both scenes matched. When questioned by police, Corrales admitted his involvement in both crimes.full story

Rocky Mountain NewsDENVER, Colorado -- Aurora police said Thursday that for the second time in a week they have arrested an illegal immigrant after a highly dangerous crash on the city's streets.Officers arrested Hipolito Vasquez Rojas, 19, after he and a 16-year-old male accomplice allegedly stole a car, crashed into a police car, plowed into a tree and then led officers on a foot chase Wednesday night.Rojas, who police say is a gang member, was deported in April following his release from the Adams County Jail after serving time for auto theft. It is not known how he turned up five months later in connection with a robbery and shooting.Court and police records show that Rojas has an extensive criminal history, including 30 felony and misdemeanor arrests mostly in Aurora for eluding police, auto theft and illegally possessing a weapon and other charges.full story

Democrats' offshore drilling plan would give states nothing
The Virginian-PilotEven as House Democratic leaders handed Republicans a symbolic victory this week in their long fight for new offshore oil development, critics charged that the fine print in the plan probably will continue to keep drillers out of the Atlantic. While lifting a 25-year federal ban on most offshore oil and natural gas drilling, the legislation would block Virginia and other coastal states from sharing in a $2.6 trillion bonanza of tax revenue expected to flow from offshore fields. A Senate bill still in the works would give states part of the money.Unless states stand to profit from offshore development, they almost surely would exercise their right under the bill to block any drilling within 100 miles of their shores, critics of the House initiative charged."With no financial incentive, no state will choose to 'opt in,' " House Republican leader John A. Boehner of Ohio told reporters, "and this bill will result in little or no new American energy production."full story

Denver, COLORADO: Deaths fan illegal immigration debate
The Washington TimesDENVER, Colorado -- An illegal immigrant charged with causing a two-car crash that left three people dead last week, including a three-year-old getting ice cream with his mother, had been arrested repeatedly, but never deported - and now Colorado lawmakers are scrambling for cover and passing blame.Gov. Bill Ritter Jr., a Democrat, said the Bush administration has understaffed U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, leaving it unable to respond when local authorities tried to have the man deported earlier this year. But federal authorities say they have no record of the report, and Rep. Tom Tancredo, Colorado Republican, says the "blood from this incident" is on the hands of Denver officials for protecting the suspect's identity. The tragedy could serve to push immigration and so-called "sanctuary city" policies back to the fore in an election-battleground state, despite the efforts of both major presidential campaigns to take the issue off the table. full story

Denver, COLORADO: Illegal Alien Arrested 16 Times Kills 3 People (Sanctuary City)
Rocky Mountain NewsDENVER, Colorado -- Aurora authorities alerted U.S. immigration officials in April that Francis Hernandez might be an illegal immigrant, Aurora police spokesman Bob Friel said Monday. But the feds didn't detain Hernandez. He remained free, despite 16 prior brushes with the law. And on Thursday, Hernandez, 23, allegedly broadsided a truck in Aurora, killing three people, including a toddler. The tragedy has many in the community demanding answers. Why wasn't Hernandez - who immigration officials said Monday they believe is a Guatemalan national here illegally - deported long ago? Why, after 16 arrests, wasn't he behind bars?"It shouldn't take a car accident and three people passing away for the government and the police to realize he should have been gone a long time ago," said Ricky Staats, whose mother, Debra Serecky, 51, was one of the victims.full story

Johnson City, TENNESSEE: Illegal aliens headed for deportation set free on interstate 81 by ICE
johnsoncitypress.comERWIN, Tennessee -- Two Hispanic men on their way to Knoxville as part of the deportation process were released Tuesday before they arrived, Unicoi County authorities said Thursday.County Jailer Rita Williams said superiors of two Immigration and Customs Enforcement employees ordered Gregorio Estala Rodriguez and Primitivo Estala Rodriguez to be let go because the New Orleans office, where the men eventually were headed, had been closed temporarily due to Hurricane Gustav.“It’s frustrating for us to know that we got illegal aliens that are breaking the law,” Sheriff Kent Harris said Thursday. “That’s a group we don’t want to have here.“I felt like when they left the jail here that there would be at least some justice because they were going to be deported back to their country. There’s a legal way to get here. That’s what they need to do is come legally.”Efforts to contact someone from ICE for comment were unsuccessful. Harris said he did not blame the local agents for what transpired.Gregorio Rodriguez, 32, who was living in Erwin, pleaded guilty Aug. 28 in Unicoi County Sessions Court to possession of schedule II drugs, possession of a weapon and violation of the open container law. A charge of not having a driver’s license was dismissed.Primitivo Rodriguez, 21, who also was living here, pleaded guilty to having no insurance and no license. A charge of possession of schedule II drugs for resale was dismissed. The men were released on their county charges on time served, but Harris said they were held until Tuesday, when ICE representatives came to get them.Williams said the men and the ICE agents were on Interstate 81 heading to Knoxville when they called the jail.“They called back and said that their boss said to turn them loose because where they’re having the hurricanes in Louisiana; that is their last stopping place before they deport them,” she said. “They said because of the hurricanes and stuff to let them go because they had no place to put them at Louisiana.”She said the agents released the two men on the interstate.According to Williams, this is the first time a situation like this has occurred in the eight years she has worked for the county jail. She said ICE agents called the jail to explain the situation in case anyone saw the men and wondered why they had not been deported.Harris said Gregorio Rodriguez was drinking a beer on Aug. 16 while driving on Railroad Street. Authorities asked him about a wanted man possibly being at his residence, and Rodriguez would not let them search it, the sheriff said. Rodriguez said he had a gun in his mobile home.Using a search warrant, authorities found a switchblade knife, a 6-inch knife, a clip to a gun, ammunition and three small baggies of cocaine, Harris said.Primitivo Rodriguez drove up to the residence and was unable to show proof of insurance, K-9 Deputy Shane Hawkins said. Hawkins said the man told him that he did not have a license.full story

EXCLUSIVE: Mexican drug wars threaten U.S.
The Washington TimesBy Jerry SeperAn escalating turf fight between warring drug cartels in Mexico is spreading into the United States with federal officials warning that deadly shootouts and ambushes along the southwestern border pose a serious threat to both U.S. law enforcement and American citizens, according to a confidential multi-agency government report. The Aug. 29 report predicts a rise in the use of "deadly force" against U.S. police officials, first responders and residents along the border, and further spillage of drug-gang violence deeper into the United States.Written by the Arizona Counter Terrorism Information Center (AcTIC) and the High-Intensity Drug Trafficking Area (HIDTA) Investigative Support Center, the report also said the drug cartels are expected to hire members of deadly street gangs now in this country, including Mara Salvatrucha (MS-13), to "carry out acts of violence against cartel members in the U.S.""U.S. law enforcement and first responders need to maintain a heightened awareness at all times," the report said. full story

Fremont, NEBRASKA: Petition is new Fremont try to oust illegal aliens
southwestiowanews.comFREMONT, Nebraska-- A group of residents wants the entire community to have a voice on a recently failed City Council ordinance intended to drive illegal immigrants from Fremont.A petition being circulated mirrors the wording of a proposed ordinance that was defeated last month by the City Council. More than 1,000 people attended the meeting at which Councilman Bob Warner's proposal was voted down.It was the first attempt by a Nebraska city to crack down on illegal immigration.A favorable vote targeting illegal immigration may not change anything, said Councilman Scott Getzschman.Getzschman voted against Warner's ordinance, saying the city could squander thousands of dollars to defend and implement the ordinance."It is not going to matter whether this ordinance is passed by the City Council or by the public,'' he said Thursday. "This ordinance, if passed, would be litigated and cost city tax dollars, which means a reduction in city services.''Fremont resident Carl Schaffner said Thursday that hundreds of Fremont residents remain bitter and angry with council members who voted against Warner's ordinance.full story

Pickens County, SOUTH CAROLINA: Illegal aliens released from custody on federal orders
independentmail.comPICKENS COUNTY, South Carolina -- Illegal immigrants arrested in Pickens County are walking back into the shadows after serving their time or paying their fines, according to officials.More than half of arrested illegal immigrants are released on the orders of U.S. Immigrations and Customs Enforcement (ICE), said Capt. Phil Sargent, jail administrator for Pickens County. The mission of ICE is “to more effectively enforce our immigration and customs laws,” but most of the agency’s Web site is devoted to anti-terrorist activities.Numerous phone calls by the Independent-Mail to various ICE offices, including one in Puerto Rico, led to dead ends in trying to obtain comments about the practice of releasing illegal immigrants who are arrested. A representative at the agency’s Washington, D.C., office seemed surprised to learn of the orders.“We fax the information (on the arrestee) to ICE headquarters in Charleston. They send back a ‘hold’ or a ‘release’ (order),” Sargent said. “We notify them when we’re finished (with the convicts), and they have 48 hours to pick them up. But more than half are released onto the street because ICE doesn’t want to pick them up.”full story

UTAH: Stop the flow of illegal aliens, lawmakers told
parkrecord.comUTAH -- Just say 'no' to illegal immigration was the message state lawmakers received at a hearing Wednesday in the Snyderville Basin.Members of the Legislature's Immigration Interim Committee ripped a Sutherland Institute policy statement presented at the meeting that reads, "We should welcome all people of good will to our state."But Sen. Bill Hickman, R-St. George, hopes a law he sponsored this year on the Hill has the opposite effect."You're welcoming anybody who comes here according to this statement," Hickman told members of the conservative Sutherland Institute, a Salt Lake City think tank.Hickman belongs to a legislative panel that is touring the state anticipating the controversial Senate Bill 81 taking effect July 2009.The new law may require government employers register to use a system that verifies the work status of new employees. The law also could require governmental entities to verify the immigration status of people who apply for state or local benefits. The law requires local police officers and sheriff's deputies begin aggressively enforcing immigration laws by detaining people living in their communities illegally.full story

ARIZONA: Drophouse landlords are rarely prosecuted
The Arizona RepublicARIZONA -- Knowingly renting to human smugglers is a federal crime, and guilty landlords can have their houses seized. But in Arizona, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement has not seized a single property or referred any landlord for prosecution.ICE agents say the main reason is that proving an owner's motives is tricky, and finding the phony renters to testify is nearly impossible.Even in the handful of cases where agents suspected that the owners knew, the government chose not to seize property because, in the current downturn, the value of the house was less than the loan.full storySome of these drophouses have been busted previously, but the Feds still have not taken action against these landlords.
