I'm running to end the game."-Barack Obama, speech in Philadelphia, Pa. April 18, 2008 homeaboutarchivesCONTEMPT FOR THE AMERICAN PEOPLE08/30/2008Send this article to a friendWhen accepting his party's nomination on Thursday, Barack Obama summed up what so many of us feel about the disastrous policies of the Bush administration with one word:
ENOUGH!
There wasn't enough time in Obama's speech and there isn't enough memory in this computer for me to list all the things I have had ENOUGH of since Bush stole the 2000 election, so I won't even try. But I will sum it up this way: George W. Bush and Dick Cheney have shown nothing but contempt for the American people over the eight years they have been in power.
Tax cuts for the wealthy and for giant corporations that ship jobs overseas show contempt for the struggles and the heartaches and the hard work of the middle and working classes.
Having birthday cake with a senator in Arizona and playing the guitar in California while Hurricane Katrina wreaked devastation on the Gulf Coast showed nothing but contempt for those who were drowning in New Orleans.
Lying us into war showed contempt for military families whose sons and daughters were sent to die unnecessarily, and for the rest of us whose financial future is still being squandered at the rate of ten billion dollars a month.
Refusing to take global warming seriously shows contempt for this and future generations who may not survive on this planet.
Vetoing stem cell legislation that a large majority of the country wants, because it used embryos that would ultimately have been discarded anyway, shows contempt for people with Alzhemier's Disease, and MS, and Diabetes, and devastating neurodegenerative diseases like the one my dad has.
I could go on and on.
Conservative Republicans may promise all they want to be compassionate, but the reality is they are contemptuous of anyone but themselves and their wealthiest contributors. Everyone else they just use and manipulate to get elected, then ignore them or cause serious harm and even death once they have power. Look how they have used the young men and women who have made the military their career. They send them over and over and over again into combat, to a war that should never have been waged, then refuse to take adequate care of them when they return home with broken minds and bodies.
There is only one thing conservative Republicans claim to love and that is the fetus. But even then it is a hollow claim as once in office they don't keep any of their promises to stop abortion. They don't really love the fetus. They just want you to think they love the fetus. If they really loved the fetus they would help impoverished pregnant women with health care and public assistance, so they could afford to continue their pregnancies and raise the children to whom they give birth.
If they really loved the fetus they would do all they could to make abortion rare, by helping women with birth control, and financial assistance, and health care, and by doing everything they could to stop rape and incest and molestation. But we never hear one word about those crimes against women and children. When was the last time you heard any Republican politician condemn rape, incest and molestation within the context of causing unwanted pregnancies? I've never heard those words come out of the mouths of any Republicans.
Come to think of it, I've never heard those words come out of the mouths of right wing religious leaders. But I have heard them condemn birth control, as well as abortion, and chastise desperate pregnant women who don't know where to turn for help. I have heard them condemn these women to hell, certain that their god has as much contempt for women as they do.
No, the "pro-life" promises of the Republicans are just another way of showing contempt for women, and also of fooling enough people to vote for them again and again and again even as nothing changes. If Republicans really cared about abortion, and the millions of babies that are never born, they would begin treating abortion like poverty – something you will never completely eliminate, but you can reduce with the right policies. (But then, Republicans have never been serious about reducing or eliminating poverty either. Republicans also have contempt for the poor.)
Let's face it, no matter what anyone thinks of abortion, we can never end it. Women will find ways to get abortions whether abortion is legal or not, but if it is illegal, some will die in the process. However, if Republicans were serious about reducing the numbers of abortions, they would find other ways to reduce them than by cynically using the promise of overturning Roe V. Wade as an election ploy year after year after year.
The latest example of contempt displayed by a Republican is the choice of Sarah Palin, former beauty queen in the Alaskan tundra, mother of five children including a four month old, and current governor of a state with a smaller population than most American cities, to be John McCain's vice presidential running mate.
Before Barack Obama chose six term Senator Joe Biden, Karl Rove was on "Face the Nation," preemptively criticizing Obama for even thinking of choosing Virginia Governor Tim Kaine to be his running mate as Kaine has "been a governor for three years, he's been able but undistinguished…I don't think people could really name a big, important thing that he's done. He was mayor of the 105th largest city in America… if he were to pick Governor Kaine, it would be an intensely political choice where he said, `You know what? I'm really not, first and foremost, concerned with, is this person capable of being president of the United States."
In other words, had Obama picked Kaine, he would not have been serious about his enormous responsibility in choosing the best person to be a heartbeat away from the presidency. He would be showing disregard for the well being of this country and he would be displaying blatant contempt for the American people.
Just like John McCain has done by choosing Sarah Palin, who has been governor an even shorter period than Tim Kaine, and mayor of an even smaller city.
Fellow citizens, we are in a war, a war for the survival of this country. That war is being led by two generals – one who is fighting it because he cares about the good of the country and he has enormous regard and respect for the American people, and one who has nothing but contempt for them, between one who really put the country first when he chose his running mate, and one who put the country last by choosing the most unqualified person he could find because he hoped to lure disaffected women, angry about Hillary's defeat.
John McCain wants to win this election, not because he cares about the American people, but because he is in love with his own ego.
John McCain chose a woman not because he believes a woman should have the opportunity to be vice president, but because he actually sees women as objects to be used.
John McCain just proved he is no different than George W. Bush. Remember the person who was celebrating his birthday with George W. Bush when people were dying during Katrina was John McCain.
John McCain, like all contemporary conservative Republican officials, has nothing but contempt for the American people. And if you didn't believe that before, his choice of vice presidential running mate should erase any doubt.
