The Chinese Youth Society of Melbourne (CYSM) is a non-profit society which celebrates and promotes all aspects of Chinese culture. For decades CYSM has been actively engaged with communities across the state of Victoria and internationally to create an awareness and appreciation of the rich culture the Chinese community has to offer. CYSM’s humble beginnings date back to 1966 when four young men, Roland Chan, Ricky Lau, Peter Louey and Henry Chiu, took the initiative to establish the first Chinese cultural society for Chinese youth in Melbourne. During Chinese New Year, they led a lion dance team which performed in Melbourne’s Chinatown with one lion. Today CYSM has a broad offering of cultural, sporting and fund-raising activities which include:• Lion Dance• Dragon Dance• Chinese Folk Dance• Dragon Boat Racing• Soccer• Miss Chinese Community QuestThroughout the year, the Chinese Youth Society of Melbourne have an active performance schedule and can be seen most weekends performing lion dance, dragon dance and Chinese folk dancing at various festivals, restaurants and special occasions in Melbourne and across Victoria. Our soccer teams can be seen playing at the Boronia Grove Reserve and Royal Park Reserve as part of the Melbourne Chinese Soccer Association (MCSA) league competition. The Dragon Boat Team (CYSM Sea Dragons) train throughout the year in preparation for the Melbourne International Dragon Boat competition. Many of our overseas based former team members continue to compete in Dragon Boat Races in Hong Kong. We have over a thousand CYSM members distributed around the world (primarily aged between 18 and 80). Team work and leadership best describe the spirit of the Chinese Youth Society of Melbourne. Each of our activities requires teamwork and dedication to training to execute a flawless performance.We have always exhibited a willingness to share our knowledge and collective experience and wish only that our contributions to the community will have a lasting and beneficial impact.
