Moreover, as with other farm animals, they are killed before their time, when they are about two years old. The same goes for dairy cows, which are slaughtered at an age of five, on average, as by this time milk production has usually declined, or because of decreased fertility, udder diseases, or other problems. In order to have sufficient milk production, it is necessary for dairy cows to give birth to a calf every year. This calf is usually taken away from the mother immediately, and male calves are often bred to be veal calves. This is a meat calf that will spend his entire life (26 weeks) in a wooden box, which is too small for the animal to turn itself around in. This way muscle development will be limited so that the meat will remain tender. Because the consumer prefers whitish-pink meat, the animal is fed an iron-deficient diet, which causes it to develop anaemia. When the calf is ready for slaughter and is taken to the slaughterhouse, it can barely walk. Nearly all pigs live in bare pens with concrete grate floors, and spend most of their lives in the dark. Castration and clipping of the canines are done without anaesthesia. Because pigs tend to bite each other's tails out of boredom and frustration, also the tails are largely cut off (also without anaesthesia). Most pigs see daylight for the first time when they are being taken to the slaughterhouse after 6 months. Breeding sows are also being kept inside all the time, and their life consists of cycles of impregnation and nourishing her young. When the piglets are born, the sow is secured in a so-called farrowing-crate to make nourishing as easy and safe as possible. Instinctively, the sow will desperately try to make a nest, but of course that's impossible in these highly unnatural surroundings. Broiler chickens are kept in large, dark hangars, where they are packed at a rate of twenty animals per square meter. They are fattened up in a period of about 6 weeks, during which their body mass increases by approximately 50 percent per day. Consequences of this fast growth rate are - among other things - breathing difficulties, heart conditions and leg-deformities. The animals are taken to the slaughterhouse in trucks, pushed into wooden crates, often with broken bones and dislocations as a consequence. The chickens that finally end up at the supermarket are actually still chicks. About 98 percent of all layer hens live in so called battery cages. Four or five animals are stuffed into one cage that is not even the size of regular sheet of paper. They are always exposed to artificial light, which is used to manipulate their laying cycles and to increase production. In these surroundings it is of course impossible for them to exhibit their natural behaviour. So called "free-range" chickens don't have a lot of space either, have a hard time taking dust baths and can't get out in the open. In other systems, chickens can go outside, but - just as is the case with battery - and free-range chickens - their beaks are being cut off with a hot knife to prevent them from injuring or plucking each other. In all cases the male chicks are being gassed or torn to pieces in a shredder, as they are "useless" for egg production. At an age of approximately 72 weeks and after a production of about 300 eggs, the layer hens are being sold as soup chickens for about 0,18 euro a piece. Several kinds of fish (among others salmon, trout and eel) are being bred very intensively nowadays, often packed together. Fish that is caught at sea have been able to live a natural life, but their end is not enviable: once out of the water, they usually die by suffocation. Ok you give up eating meat and fish, never again a nice steak or some sweet ham, away with fresh fish, no more wild deer, beef, roasted chicken, chicken wings, turkey breast, pheasant, lamb, veal hearts, pork spare ribs, cordon blue, liver, salmon fillets, shrimps, tuna, lobster, scrod fillets, catfish fillets, fresh oysters, herring in wine sauce, roast beef, liverwurst, salami,... but is this so much. There are coming more and more vegetarian products on the market, a lot taste great. I don't want to preach or lecture you.
