Burmese-American ClubBurmese-American ClubFort Wayne, Ind., is home to more than 350 Burmese refugees. According to the Fort Wayne News-Sentinel, this is the largest group of Burmese refugees in the United States.Unlike the pro-democracy Burmese college students who fled their country after protests and came here in the early 1990s, the Fort Wayne contingent is part of a new wave of Burmese exiles. The newest immigrants, mostly farmers and jungle fighters, are less educated and often have been more violated. They've spent years in a state of flux and experienced atrocities at the hands of the State Law and Order Restoration Council (SLORC: Burma's military junta, recently renamed the State Peace and Development Council).
