 XIV Skull < ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------->  Secret societies, as opposed to fraternities, hold their membership and activities as secret as their rituals. The first and most famous such society is the Order of Skull and Bones at Yale, which was the inspiration for the 2000 motion picture The Skulls.Much more secretive and mysterious than even the Skull and Bones is a society at the University of Illinois known as the Order of the 14 Skull. At one time, Illinois had many secret societies, but most of them have disappeared into obscurity. Two competing societies, Phoenix and Shield & Trident, evolved into simple honor societies and eventually merged to form Ma-Wan-Da. Whether others still exist, no one knows.Only the Order of the 14 Skull is rumored to still exist at Illinois, but no one has been able to prove or disprove the rumors. According to the legends, the Order selects and invites exactly 14 new members into their order every spring. The means of invitation is unknown, but supposedly they are secretly led to the University Cemetary where they are initiated at 14 minutes past midnight on the vernal equinox. This timing is no accident, as the Order seems to incorporate the number 14 into everything they do. On the fourteenth day of every month of the school year, activity can be seen in the shadows of the cemetary, but no one has seen a group come together to meet. Some say that the 14 Skull have a secret meeting room in a crypt beneath the cemetary with an entrance through one or more of the old tombs. If this is true, it has never been proven.Why do fourteen elite leaders on campus join a society like this every year and never reveal their association? Perhaps it is a fascination with mystery. Perhaps it is the thrill of being selected to such an exclusive order. Perhaps it is the link to alumni of that group who have power and influence in Chicago, Springfield, and throughout the country. It is probably all of the above.Is the Order of the 14 Skull real or just a legend? It sounds too bizarre and unlikely to be true, but every legend has some basis in fact.In 1988, some papers were discovered at the Chi Psi Lodge that appeared to contain secrets of the 14 Skull, including a design for a Badge. The document was written entirely in Latin, and before it could be deciphered, it disappeared without a trace. Was this somehow related to the sudden decline in membership at Chi Psi, leading to the sale and demolition of the Lodge less than five years later? Chi Psi is on the rise again, but at what cost? It was once believed that Chi Psi was involved in the original founding of the 14 Skull. If so, they were given no special treatment when the Order's secrecy was at stake.Occasionally a person is overheard mysteriously using expressions like "fourteen point rack" or "running skull". Are these secret recognition signs or just coincidence?
