Worms That Eat Toxic Waste
Wednesday, October 8, 2008
How about that? Newly evolved “superworms” that feast on toxic waste could help cleanse polluted industrial land, a new study says. These hardcore heavy metal fans, unearthed at disused mining sites in England and Wales, devour lead, zinc, arsenic, and copper. The earthworms excrete a slightly different version of the metals, making them easier for plants to suck up. Harvesting the plants would leave cleaner soil behind.“These worms seem to be able to tolerate incredibly high concentrations of heavy metals, and the metals seem to be driving their evolution,” said lead researcher Mark Hodson of the University of Reading in England…DNA analysis of lead-tolerant worms living at Cwmystwyth, Wales, show they belong to a newly evolved species that has yet to be named, he said.Popularity: 10% [?]

Brown-Eyed Susan
Wednesday, October 8, 2008
Brown-Eyed Susan - Rudbeckia triloba.A very popular and common flower, the Brown-Eyed Susan is easy to identify with its yellow petals and brown center. Usually comes up biennially. A favorite of many bees, flies, wasps, butterflies and beetles (despite the fact that the plant is self-pollinating). The flower in the second photo (with the plant bug Lygus sp. on it) appears to have dropped most of its seed, revealing a more reddish looking center.Found throughout most of the US, except the west, southwest, northwest, and parts of the extreme northeast.Photo taken with the Canon Digital Rebel XT / 350D and a Sigma 70-300mm Lens on September 27, 2008 in Davenport, Iowa.Popularity: 11% [?]

Flower Fly on Sedum
Sunday, October 5, 2008
Flower Fly - from the Syrphidae family. Genus and species is tough to discern from this angle. Possibly genus Syrphus.Sedum Autumn Joy - Sedum telephium - also known as S. Herbstfreude.“Sedum” is the common name, but also represents the genus of about 400 species of plants. This particular one is called “Autumn Joy,” probably because it blooms these nice reddish blooms in early Autumn. Photo taken with the Canon Digital Rebel XT / 350D and a Sigma 70-300mm Lens on September 23, 2008 in Davenport, Iowa.Popularity: 18% [?]

American Toad
Monday, September 29, 2008
American Toad - Bufo americanus.American toads require a semi-permanent freshwater pond or pool for their early development. They also require dense patches of vegetation, for cover and hunting grounds. Given these two things and a supply of insects for food, American toads can live almost everywhere, ranging from forests to backyards. They are common in gardens and agricultural fields. During daylight hours they seek cover beneath porches, under boardwalks, flat stones, boards, logs, wood piles, or other cover. When cold weather comes, these toads dig backwards into their summer homes or may choose another site in which to hibernate. Cite.I have had many toads living in my yard this year. This photo, however, is from last year. The red on the side of his face is mulch.Photo taken with the Canon Digital Rebel XT / 350D and a Sigma 70-300mm Lens on May 28, 2007 in Davenport, Iowa.Popularity: 31% [?]

Chinese Mantis Eating
Saturday, September 20, 2008
Chinese Mantis - Tenodera aridifolia sinensis - feeding on a Common House Fly - Musca domestica, also known as Mouche domestique (French), musca domestica (Spanish), mosca domestica (Italian), Husflugan (Swedish).Chinese Mantids (the plural form of Mantis) were introduced to North America from China as a source of pest control. It turned out to be another ill-conceived introduction, not because Chinese Mantids have become invasive or problematic, per se, but because they really do very little in the name of pest control. Chinese Mantids (and other mantids) do prey on other insects, but not in great enough numbers that they can be considered pest-reducers. Further, mantids do not discriminate and routinely eat beneficial pollinators, as well as each other (thinning the ranks of pest-eating mantids). I suppose the Chinese Mantid could be considered a pest itself when it ambushes and eats native mantids (like the Carolina Mantis) and native beneficial insects (like butterflies and bees).Photo taken with the Canon Digital Rebel XT / 350D and a Sigma 70-300mm Lens on July 21, 2008, in Davenport, Iowa.Popularity: 48% [?]

Signal Fly
Wednesday, September 17, 2008
Signal Fly - from the Platystomatidae Family (Signal Flies) and the Rivellia genus. Species identification is extremely difficult.Called “Signal” Flies because their wings are in almost constant motion, as if they are giving signals.“Platystomatidae appear to have an association with ripe or rotting fruit, carrion, dung and other items of decay, where eggs are laid and the larvae develop.” Cite.Photos taken with the Canon Digital Rebel XT / 350D and a Sigma 70-300mm Lens on July 16, 2008, in Davenport, Iowa.Popularity: 54% [?]
