October 2, 2008 ; Lakewood Ranch, FL:
American ShelterBox Response Team (SRT) members and ShelterBox photographer Mark Pearson have sent the first images from Gonaives, Haiti; where a series of hurricanes have caused widespread damage and displaced thousands of SRTs John Mackie from Tallahassee, FL and Wayne Robinson from Roswell, GA deployed to distribute 224 boxes that had been pre-positioned in Panama. ShelterBox is working with the Red Cross in Haiti to distribute the boxes.
The team said: “Gonaives suffered the most damage in Haiti. 5,500 houses were completely destroyed and 22,000 were severely damaged. The town is covered in six feet of mud and flood water. There are people living in churches who have lost everything. In the main cathedral, 600 people are living in a 50m area which is covered in mud, with children sleeping on the floor, covered in flies, without sleeping mats or blankets.
“The UN Mission has welcomed our kit, which, so far, is the only aid of its kind in Gonaives. We set up a ShelterBox camp in a clear area on high ground and 66 families have moved in. Oxfam is providing sanitation, food and water,” The team said.
Tropical Storm Fay and hurricanes Gustav, Hanna and Ike caused severe flooding and mudslides on what is said to be one of the Americas’ poorest islands. It has been reported that up to 700 people may have died in the series of storms, and hundreds of thousands of people have been displaced.
Monday, September 15, 2008; Lakewood Ranch, FL: Americans deliver more aid to hurricane hit Caribbean
Three Americans are assisting Disaster relief charity ShelterBox in sending a further 200 boxes to
the Caribbean after a series of hurricanes killed hundreds of people and made thousands homeless.
After an initial consignment of 224 boxes to Haiti, ShelterBox is now also sending an additional 200
boxes to the islands of Turks and Caicos.
The American ShelterBox Response Team (SRT) is delivering and distributing the aid in Turks and Caicos
to those in need. The Team consists of Larry Agee from Lake Charles, Louisiana and Traci Oliver from
Denver, Colorado. SRT member John Lacquey of Branford, Florida will join the team in Turks and Caicos
after supervising the delivery of aid from Miami to the disaster zone.
ShelterBox responded to requests for assistance in these areas after Tropical Storm Fay and hurricanes
Gustav, Hanna and Ike hit the islands, causing widespread devastation. It has been reported that up to
700 people may have died in the series of storms, and hundreds of thousands of people have been
displaced.
A second ShelterBox Response Team is currently in Port au Prince, Haiti, on standby to distribute the
ShelterBoxes, which are due to arrive today.
Tuesday, September 9th 2008 Americans responding to Haiti disaster
Lakewood Ranch, FL: ShelterBox is responding to a request for assistance in the Caribbean
island of Haiti, after a series of hurricanes and tropical storms caused widespread
devastation.
A ShelterBox Response Team (SRT) will depart immediately for the island’s capital
Port-au-Prince. A further team is likely to follow.
The US-SRT’s include John Mackie from Tallahassee, FL and Wayne Robinson from Roswell, GA.
Tropical Storm Fay and hurricanes Gustav, Hanna and Ike caused severe flooding and mudslides
on what is said to be one of the Americas’ poorest islands. It has been reported that up to
700 people may have died in the series of storms, and hundreds of thousands of people have been
displaced.
ShelterBox provides aid in the form of boxes containing items such as ten-man tents, blankets,
mosquito nets, cooking equipment and water purification.
Thursday, September 4th, 2008 Three Americans Respond to Nepal Flood
Lakewood Ranch, FL: ShelterBox has deployed a second response team to Nepal after severe flooding
displaced an estimated 70,000 people. The disaster zone has received 224 boxes of aid that are being
distributed by ShelterBox Response Team (SRT) members. Another 400 ShelterBoxes are due to arrive
this weekend.
The initial ShelterBox Response Team, Gary Boe from Washington state and Jim Miller from Florida,
assessed the need for aid in the disaster zone, reporting their findings to Headquarters. The second
team, Shaun Halbert and Mark Pearson from the UK, Bruce Dearnley from Pennsylvania, and Hans Van Dyk
from Australia will ensure that the aid gets to the people who need it.
A report today from SRT’s in Itaari, Nepal, 30km west of the Indian border provided ShelterBox with
critical details.
“About, 40,000 people in the Sunsari district and 20,000 people in Saptari are in need of shelter,
and an additional 10,000 people have crossed from India into Nepal, moving north to Saptari,” the
SRT’s said. “As a length of dual carriageway has been damaged by the floods, the aid is being
transported by helicopter and boat. Displaced people have been directed to higher ground by the
Nepalese Army, where camps are being established.”
The disaster was caused by heavy rains, which caused a breach on an embankment of the Kosi River.
The river is reported to have changed its course, flooding areas which are not usually affected by
floods to this extent.
ShelterBox is working with the Nepalese Army, the local Red Cross and Rotaract representatives to
distribute the aid.

August 8, 2008-SRT Report from Myanmar
ShelterBox Response Team (SRT) member Rick Commisso, from Shelby Township, Michigan, has returned
after spending two weeks delivering aid in the Irrawaddy Delta region of Myanmar.
Rick’s SRT training in the UK was completed just days before his deployment to Myanmar. He was
accompanied by SRT members Adrian Sumner and John Pearson from the UK.
ShelterBox is understood to be the first international aid agency to enter Myanmar after Cyclone
Nargis struck in May this year.
In all, ShelterBox has delivered over 2,000 boxes of aid to Myanmar following the disaster and
provided shelter for more than 25,000 people who had been displaced. Other essential items included
were mosquito nets and tools for rebuilding.
Among the most well-received items were the Classrooms in a Box, which contain essential supplies
for teachers, with enough materials for 50 school children. Rick recalls numerous children carrying
the ShelterBox backpacks around, showing them off, “the Classrooms in a Box were a big hit, kids
loved them,” said Rick. “Everyone was very impressed.”
ShelterBox has been working with with the Agency for Technical Cooperation and Development (ACTED)
in Myanmar. Together we are assisting survivors to ensure their success in the rebuilding process,
by providing long-term aid in delta region of Myanmar.
August 6, 2008- European flood victims receive ShelterBox aid
ShelterBox has responded to the news of severe flooding in Central and Eastern Europe by sending
much-needed aid for the estimated 30,000 people who have been displaced by the disaster.
ShelterBox Response Team (SRT) members Shaun and Carol Halbert, from Truro, Cornwall, flew to
Budapest in Hungary this week and are travelling into the disaster zone to assess the needs of the
affected areas.
“We are currently in Rakhiv in the Ukraine, which is close to the Romanian border. Here, around 85
homes have been destroyed or severely damaged in flooding and resulting landslides,” ShelterBox
Response Team Member, Shaun Halbert, said. “Today, we will travel further into the disaster zone
to the more remote villages, to assess their situation and need for aid.”
ShelterBox has sent 200 boxes of aid from the UK to the Ukraine, containing essentials such as ten
person tents, blankets, cooking equipment, tools and water purification kits.
Over thirty people have been killed, with dozens still missing. Thousands of homes have been destroyed
or made inhabitable, and more than 20,000 people have been evacuated from the disaster zone. The Poorest
regions of the Ukraine, Romania, Slovakia, Hungary and the Republic of Moldova have been the most affected
areas. The flooding of the Dniester and Prut rivers were caused by what is said to be the worst storms in over
two centuries.
