These planes, and the brave pilots that have flown them, ushered in the aerospace age. From the primitive X-1and X-2, the exotic X-3, the hyper-fast X-15 and the futuristic X-29, these planes have constantly pushed the envelopes of design, materials and human courage. Some of the X-planes were designed for speed and high altitude, others to prove aerodynamic principles, and others as test beds for next-generation power plants. The pilots that flew the X-planes include the famous and the unfamiliar, include Charles "Chuck" Yeager, Neil Armstrong, William J. "Pete" Knight, Frank "Pete" Everest, Scott Crossfield, and others. These men risked, and sometimes lost, their lives in the quest for speed, altitude and knowledge. Most of these planes were flown from Muroc Air Field, later named Edwards Air Force Base. This site was selected for its expansive, rock-hard dry lakebed surface, clear skies and isolation from populated areas.
