Modus Operandi

De Salvo would spend a little time targetting his victims, gaining admissionto the premises under the guise of being an official authorised to carry outbusiness in the unsuspecting victim's home.All his victims were women, sexually assaulted, and strangled - usually withan item of their own clothing (stockings, tights which he would tie with abow under the chin). In some cases strangulation had been accompanied bybiting, bludgeoning and stabbing.For reasons which even De Salvo confessed to not knowing, he would positionthe victims body, after killing them, in obscene positions in such a waythat whoever entered the house after he left would be presented with theshocking sight with no warning.

Motives

After the murder of Helen Blake, forensic psychiatrists were enlisted to helpprofile the killer commiting these attrocities against women. The resultingopinions were that he was a youngish man (18-40), sufffering delusions ofpersecution and with a hatred of his mother (this was before younger victimsstarted to appear).However, on 5th December of the initial year of the murders, the theory ofthe killer being a mother-hater collapsed when Sophie Clark was murdered.A new 'psychofit' was provided by the 'father' of American Psychologicalprofiling, Dr James Brussel. The Killer was now considered to be aged 30,strongly built, average height, clean shaven with thick dark hair; possiblyof Spanish or Italian background - and a paranoid schizophrenic. It wasamazingly accurate when compared with the killer later on.

When being question by the police as to why he targetted such a variety ofwomen from young to mature, he responded impatiently..."Attractiveness had nothing to do with it...When this certain time comes on me, it's a very immediate thing. When I get this feeling, instead of going to work I make an excuse to my boss. I start driving and I start building this image up, and that's why I find myself not knowing where I'm going."

Comments

Despite all the efforts of all involved trying to solve the case, it was thestrangler himself who caused his own capture.On 27th October, 1964, he entered a young woman's home posing as a detective.He tied his victim to the victim's bed, proceeded to sexually assault her,and suddenly left, saying "I'm sorry" as he went. The woman's description tothe police led to his identification as Albert De Salvo, with the publicationof his photo resulting in women coming forward in droves identifying him asthe man who had assaulted them. At this point, De Salvo was not suspected ofbeing involved with the spate of stranglings that had taken place over aperiod of nearly two years, and wasn't until he was being held on a rapecharge that he confessed in great detail his activities as the BostonStrangler.However, there was no evidence to substantiate his confession, and as such,stood trial for earlier, unrelated crimes of robbery and sexual offences.He was sent to prison for life in 1967, but was to be murdered six yearslater while in his cell.Return to the Serial Killer WWW...This page hosted by Geocities Get your own Free Home Pagegeovisit();setstats 1
