Napoleonic calendar Today: Napoleonic Reenacting The 1st Regiment of Polish Guard Lancers By Jerzy Lubomski In 1993 an idea was envisaged to re-create a historical unit of Polish cavalry set in one of the most colourful periods of military history... the Napoleonic Wars. The unit chosen was that of the lst Polish Lancers of Napoleon's Imperial Guard on the grounds that to many historians ,model makers and war gamers this regiment was perhaps the best known of many Polish units of that time that served the Emperor Napoleon and was privileged to serve as the bodyguard to this most famous of men during the turbulent times that re-shaped Poland and Europe. The Polish Guard Lancers were formed in Warsaw in 1807 under the command of Col. Vincent Krasiński and immediately taken into French service, [unlike other Polish units who belonged to the newly created Duchy of Warsaw under the command of Prince Józef Poniatowski.] As part of the French army the Poles were organized and trained as other French cavalry units under French instructors with a French administrative staff and orders issued in French. Uniforms were cut according to Polish tradition and national colours with the Polish czapka headdress denoting these troops as Poles. All other equipment issued was of French manufacture... It is as valuable as unfortunately it has been both forgotten and destroyed. This monument made of sandstone seems to be exhausting its last breaths. In case there will not be performed any works of preservation it maight have not stood any trace of the slight rest of the inscriptions. It is worth to tell something more both about the monument and about general Rheinwald. The tablet made of the sand stone is placed in the internal arch of the Fort Stern, that is located to west from the downtown on the area of the base of Polish Bus Communication Enterprise at Piastowska street. Area of the base is not used and not playing any function it slowly becomes to be the ruin. The surrounding of it is full of rubbish, scarp-iron and wastes. It deepen the bad impression. Both the buildings of the Fort and the table of general Rheinwald are not inscribed on the List of the monuments. As a consequence of this fact any intervention of the Office of Preservation of the Monuments there has consequences in meaning of low... On November 27 Murat's cavalry reached Warsaw. In the liberated part of the Prussian sector of partitioned Poland, Polish military forces were beginning to gather. General Jan Henryk D±browski, in compliance with Napoleon's designs, began forming the 30,000 strong Polish army and planning an uprising in the Wielkopolska region. In mid-November he called up former soldiers of the Polish Commonwealth and gave orders that from every ten households, one recruit was to be enlisted. On January 18, 1807, the resolution of the Governing Commission (as provisional government was known) was issued. It announced the creation of a battalion to be commanded by a colonel attached to each of the legions headed respectively by Generals Poniatowski, Zaj±czek and D±browski, three in total. This battalion consisted "of three artillery companies to be structured like infantry companies, one company of sappers to be structured like artillery companies, and one supply company". This form of organisation lasted until the beginning of 1810. The only change introduced in the meantime was the addition of supply trains to the supply battalion, formed just before the war of 1809 and abolished after the war. And an artisan company took care of the repair of equipment and arms. The 3rd battalion of D±browski's legion was the only one to participate in the war of 1807, fighting in the vicinity of Tczew. Having besieged Danzig (Gdańsk), it then set off to East Prussia, arriving just in time to take part in the victory at Friedland... By Ph.d. Krzysztof Ostrowski of OSEN We have been whitnesses of bicenturies anniversary of the glory of Austerlitz, that took place in Czech`s Slavkov u Brna. Thousands of uniforms, thousands of spectators - european medial event. On the other hand it maight be interesting how the slovakian Bratislava memorize on 26th of december bicentury anniversary of signing the treaty of peace. It recalled instead battle fields treaties of Campo-Formio and Luneville. In napoleonic epoque not only the art of strategy and sacrifice of thousand who died was finishing the political agreement, on which there were built following foundations of the future Europe. It is worth to remember that in one year distance we will start to memorize bicenturies of the military rivalry at the mouth of Wkra river, at Nasielsk, Gołymin, Pułtusk, Morąg, Barkweda, great battle at prussian Iława and then polish attacks at Tczew. Finally there was the battle at Frydland, that led to the treaty of peace in Tylża. The treaty had significant results for all its sides. For us the effect of that campaign was "Constitution of the Duchy of Warsaw", that created small but very important step towards to the Europe. The circle of the persons, that have been associated with OSEN (Institute of the studies over the napoleonic epoque), is convinced with the new perspectives for the interesting valuation of the napoleonic epoque. We have participated in memorizing the anniversaries of the bicenturies since the anniversary of 18th of Brumaire. We tried our forces in various events: historical display of the battles, milityary camps and imperial balls. Having one year distance of time before "our moment" we adress our appeal and polite request about the initiatives, that might recall the life in that times in poor regions of both prussian occupation and Prussia forced to mantain formany months hundred thousands of soldiers, thousands of officers, hundreds of generals and marshals. We are about preparations of syntetical aproach to that times in form of monography of Duchy of Warsaw. We are gratefull to the marshals governors of Mazovian, Warmian-Mazurian and Pommeranian Regions for their kind agreement to patronate the events recalling the most important moments of that times. Precised plans are expected to be published till the June 2006. In one month time there will be published first projects of international events, that will be held in cooperation with similar institutions from France, Germany and Russia, which are interested in memorizing the bicenturies of polish campaigns. The Christmas evening and whole Christmas of 1806 Napoleon spent in following places: Okunin-Czarnów, Nasielsk, Łopacin. New year was welcomed by Napoleon in Pułtusk. All the best! Polish Army of Duchy of Warsaw Cheval Legers by Piotr Pacak 1st Reginemt of Cheval Legers - Lanciers. Grosmajors were Charles Delaitre of Guard of Mameluks and Piere Datancourt of Gendarmerie. Chef of squadrons were: Tomasz Łubieński, Jan Kozietulski, Ferdynand Stokowski and Henryk Kamieński.
