Islamic Studies Pathways - an Academic Guide to Islamic Studies Resources on the Internet
This is a non-hierarchical, regularly updated listing of recommended Internet
sites about Islam. Many of the sites defy rigid categorisation, so the optimum
way of reading the pages is to take a few hours out of your schedule, and scroll
down the links. If you don't have the time for that, or are looking for something
specific on this site, try a keyword search [CTRL+F] or the
Virtually Islamic search-engine. Pathways has been online since 1996, and
contains 100+ links to resources useful for Islamic Studies (academic and other). Some of
the sites have been on the listing for several years, but remain extremely useful, because
they have been frequently updated. I try to check as many of the URLs as I can on a regular
basis. This listing is now integrated with the Virtually
Islamic site, which also contains a variety of listings and resources (including
News about Islam, Muslims and Cyberspace), a listing of the Islamic Blogosphere and Podcast links, together with details of my books and a blog. Your comments
and recommendations are welcomed, as are suggestions for future editions. Feel free to
list the URL on your own website.
Whilst every effort is made to keep this listing up-to-date, changes frequently
occur to websites. Readers encounting persistent Error messages on any site
listed below, or hacked pages, are requested to contact me in order that this

QUR'AN EXPLORER
Features translations in several languages, recitation 'from 6 famous Qaris',
and 'live Qur'an tutoring' via QuranInteractive.com
Among the innovations are the Qur'an browser, and the colour-coded tajwid
rules. Sound quality and choice of recitations is good. Accessible, with no
downloads required (although the lessons come with an initial 2-day trial
- I haven't tested that area).
GUIDED WAYS iiii
This offers a comprehensive range of tools and downloads, much of it free
and multi-format (Windows, Mac OS X, Linux, mobile phone). There is also a
searchable Qur'an and Hadith database. I have not tested all the products
from this site, so would welcome authentic consumer reports. Similar products
are available elsewhere, etc.
AL-ISLAM.COM (QUR'AN) iiiii
Well produced, extensive site including Qur'an-ic recitation, a Hadith
Encyclopedia, and an Encyclopedia of Islamic Jurisprudence - together with
other material. The Qur'an pages contain commentaries, and Java script -
making this a user-friendly interface. The material is available in Arabic,
English, French, Turkish, and Malay. Requires Real Audio. Sound quality
is good, and there is a choice of recitors. Probably the best Qur'an source
available online...
King Fahd Complex
for the Printing of the Holy Qur'an iiii
An improved and is a useful resource, in particular for the good quality
recitations and ease of navigability. There is an irritating pop-up window
for font smoothing (OK if you have permissions to install on your machine
- otherwise a problem). Other features: four recitors, live feed + MP3 and
Real Player download options. Searchable fatwa database (limited, but useful
albeit from a specific perspective).
al-Tafsir.com iii
A welcome addition to the quranic materials available online, produced
by the Aal al-Bayt Institute for Islamic Thought, this provides a variety
of materials associated with commentaries of the Qur'an. The site is very
much an on-going project, notable for developing with Martin Lings a much-anticipated
new English translation of the meaning of the Qur'an, and "a user-friendly
interface for the study and comparison of all the established qira’at
and maqams of Quran recitation." Some areas of the site lead to blank pages
for English-only speakers (tafsirs/recitations). Translations of the Qur'an
in seventeen languages.
Memorize-Quran.com iiii
Linked to DigitalHalal, this
provides a multi-interface set of tools to facilitate the memorization of
the Qur'an (i.e. on your mobile phone, PDA, PC, etc.). The site is easy
to navigate, and offers assistance on techniques for memorization. Qur'an
downloads are recited by Mishary Rashed and Saad Alghamdy.
RADIO AL-ISLAM iiiii
A comprehensive selection of Qur'an recitals, from the IslamiCity site.
Requires RealPlayer.
MSA-USC
QUR'AN DATABASE iiii
This database is a good (and long established) option for searching for
extracts from the Qur'an online. The New Ultraseek Search is particularly
effective. The search engine uses Pickthall, Yusuf Ali and Shakir translations
of the meaning of the Qur'an.
THE CLEAR PATH
Regularly updated, and with an effective design. Features an online version
of the Hilali/Kan translation of the meaning of the Qur'an (as discussed
in Virtually Islamic), and works by Ibn Taymiyyah and Ibn Baz.
QUR'AN RECITATION:
SH. HUTHAYFI ii
Produced by the Islamic Audio Studios, portions of the Qur'an are recited
by Sheikh Huthayfi. This site requires a RealPlayer. English language content
also available.
QURAN RECITATION

This is maintained by the Islamic Bookstore, and offers some good samples
of its recitation catalogue. Recitors, including Saad al Ghamdi and Muhammad
Siddiq al-Minshawi, provide high quality recordings.
THE NOBLE QURAN iiii
Produced by SalafiPublications.com, this offers a number of searchable
options through the translation of the Qur'an (verse number or title), and
commentaries (Ibn Katheer, Tabari, Qurtubi). Note that to utilise the full
range of online services, registration is required. Nice interface!
THE MOSQUE OF THE INTERNET iiii
Extensive resources associated with the At-Tariqah As-Sammaniyyah Order,
including links to the Qur'an in Arabic and Urdu. Offer a free 'anti-Wahhabi'/'anti-

Produced by Islamic Assembly of North America, this is a comprehensive
listing of recitation - linking to exponents of quranic recitation whose
work can be heard in MP3 and Real formats. Streaming and Downloads available.

'Holy Quran Resources on the Internet'

Links into the many web resources on the Qur'an, such as translations and
a page of an early Qur'an manuscript. Recently updated the look of the site,
making it far more user-friendly and accessible.
Islamic Finder iiii
A comprehensive range of resources here, with notable features including
downloadable Athan software, Calendar conversion, and prayer times for personal
websites. The index of searchable resources and categories could be a useful
starting point for research projects.
IslamWeb
IslamWeb contains an impressive database of quranic resources. Features
include a Fatwa database, fatwa of the week, Islamic songs, prayer times,
and selected e-books. There are substantial materials aimed at potential
and new converts and 'reverts'. This is a well-designed and much-improved
portal (also available in Arabic and French versions).
MOONSIGHTING HOME PAGE
This is an extremely comprehensive and interesting resource, which provides
resources on calendars, moonsighting, and prayer calculation. The site's
main asset is the discussion on the mathematics of such calculations, which
are complex but essential for an understanding of appropriate observation
of prayers, and festivals such as Eid-al-Adha.
AL MUHADDITH ISLAMIC LIBRARY

Arabic, Indonesian and English downloadable resources - regularly updated
- including Qur'an translations and prayer-time calculators. Make sure you've
got plenty of disk-space ...
ISLAM ONLINE

A substantial, regularly updated resource, with interesting features and
articles. The Live Fatwa and Cyber Counsellor sections discuss important
contemporary issues. Services include a date converter, calendar, and e-cards.
This site merits regular visits.
ISLAMICITY iiiii
One of the most comprehensive Islam-related sites on the Internet, well-managed,
and worthy of several visits. This site can take a long-time to download,
and can be 'overwhelming' in terms of its depth of content and links.
MSA-USC
Hadith Database iiii
In addition to their Qur'an Database (listed above), MSA-USC have also
produced a useful Hadith Database, drawing on Bukhari, Muslim, Abu-Dawud,
and Malik's Muwatta.
Khutbah.com iii
Khutbahs (sermons) on demand, categorised by Societal Issues, Seeking Knowledge,
Islamic Beliefs and Returning to Allah. Material has a Sunni perspective:
also contains articles, a discussion forum, and an emailing list.
Islamic Torrents iii
Archive of film materials and resources associated with Islamic themes,
which uses BitTorrent to download.
CHANNEL 4: THE
HAJJ iiii
Based around the British TV Channel 4's coverage of the Hajj in 2003, this
includes a 'virtual hajj' (requires Flash), and
film coverage/reports taken from the pilgrimage. There are basic introductions
to elements of Islam on the site. There is a 'set' of
Hajj prayers available, in English, Arabic and audio formats. Questions
sent to Zaki Badawi through the 'Ask
our Imam' page page, are archived on the site. All in all, a very credible
effort to cover the pilgrimage using different aspects of multi-media.
AL-IMAM
There is an emphasis on multimedia on this site, which features Flash Animation
clips on aspects of Shi'ism. There is also a substantial
sound archive, including recitation and nashids (recording in Bahrain).
Also includes 'Islamic' phone
tones.
Parvez Video
Extensively resourced site, seeking to "preserve the work of Allama Parvez
on the Quran." It includes a number of videos
and audio lectures, with a strong focus on Pakistan.
THE LIFE OF THE LAST PROPHET

Based on Sira sources, Yusuf Islam's audio production of Muhammad's
life - containing recitations, sound effects and music - provides an interesting
introduction to the subject. It used to be available as a MP3 file for free
download - but now only appears to be available commercially . However,
an online sample can be found at the Islamic

ST MARTIN'S
COLLEGE, ENCYCLOPEDIA OF WORLD RELIGIONS, 'ISLAM'
Part of an Encyclopedia of World Religions, this contains useful articles
on aspects of Islam, in an easy to navigate format, including sections (and
sub-sections) on Sunni, Shia, and Sufi beliefs.
ISLAM FOR TODAY iiii
Islam for Today features a section on Ground Zero,, information about women
in Afghanistan, and a 'starter' set of Islamic Studies resources. A useful
resource, which is regularly updated.
MUSLIM STUDENTS' ASSOCIATION iiii
U.S.-based, information-rich site. Check out the Calligraphy and Image
Archives. Fascinating choice of routes to Islamic primary sources (Qur'an,
Hadith, etc.), as well as Tafsir commentaries.
Muslim Space iii
'Halal' equivalent of MySpace - be prepared for lots of multimedia (videos,
pix, audio) and chat.

Liberal

Based around Charles Kurzman's anthology 'Liberal Islam', this is a useful
selection of updated links relating to the authors in the book, including

This is a Yahoo Groups list containing news and quotations about 'shariah',
drawn from a broad range of sources, and including World, Regional (by country),
and Finance sections.
THE MIDDLE EAST MEDIA RESEARCH INSTITUTE
(MEMRI) iiii
MEMRI provides translations of Middle East media resources, including sermons
taken from a variety of broadcasts, and some streaming media links. The
site has been controversial, with some accusations of bias from Arab and
other sources, especially in terms of some of the translations provided
(and their emphasis). MEMRI has its headquarters in Washington DC, with
offices in Berlin, London, and Jerusalem. Materials are available in in
Hebrew, Russian, Turkish, French, German, Italian and Spanish.

This is a very useful overview of elements of Muslim history, produced
in a user-friendly format, ideal for students and those seeking to locate
information on key Muslim personalities and developers in areas of the sciences
and the arts. The production of this site fills an important 'gap' in cyberspace.
IslamToday
Arabic/English site, containing fatwas and downloadable books (in PDF format)
representing the perspective of Sheikh Salman bin Fahd al-Oadah. The design
is effective, and generally functional. Particularly interesting is an article
by Layla Bayyoumi, on "American
Aggression on Iraq - Its Effects on the Mental Health of Our Children in
the Muslim World."

There are three key areas to this French language site: Jean-François Legrain's
Guide de Palestine-sur-Web
has a good overview of Palestinian materials available online, categorised
and easy to navigate; specific details on the online 'intifada' feature
in Legrain's

and detailed introduction to the phenomena (also discussed in Virtually
Islamic and my forthcoming book); finally, Laurence Louër has produced a

Interesting variation of the 'martyr' site phenomenon, containing Flash
images and biographical data. In French.
The Electronic
Intifada: Live from Palestine iii
The Electronic Intifada is a significant news resource, presenting (from
a Palestinian perspective) a broad range of materials, including news feeds,
interviews, and information packs. 'Live from Palestine' is a diaries project
contained in the site; its writers are drawn from diverse backgrounds, and
many are not professional journalists. They present 'grass roots' perspectives
of contemporary issues, and eyewitness accounts from within different locations
across the region. This site is fully archived, searchable, and worthy of
frequent visits.

Presented by the Jerusalem Forum, this contains some excellent archive
material, discussing religious, historical and cultural dimensions of Al-Quds.

Part of Palestine-Info.com, this HAMAS Website' contains Arabic, French,
Farsi, Malay, Russian, Urdu and English content. This represents the latest
URL for English content. A number of other pro-Hamas sites can be found

Editorially-focused, Arabic site, promoting current Fateh policy.

UK based page, providing background information on Sudan, and extensive

This is a database providing contact information and other materials relating
to key figures in the 'Arab World', from presidents downwards. The site
is organised by the Mafhoum
portal. There is also data on research institutions and universities. This
is a good opportunity to test whether administrations read their e-mail.

and Middle Eastern Law Materials on the Net
Part of the World Wide Web Virtual Library, this contains a significant
range of legalistic resources for study, categorised into Ancient (pre-Islamic)
Middle East, Primary Sources, Commentary and Legal Rulings, Constitutional
Law, International Law, Texts from Commercial and Personal Sites, and Texts
from Government Sites. The site is probably best suited to specialist readers.
PAKISTAN GOVERNMENT iii
Pakistan Government link-page to national, English-language papers: Dawn,
The News, The Nation, and The Frontier Post. The site also provides jumps
to other media sources, official press releases, and data on Pakistan.

Jamaat-e-Islami is one of several Muslim parties in Pakistan. This highly-detailed
website provides news, speeches, Qur'an commentaries, and background data
on the party.

Israr Ahmed is a well-known figure in Pakistan for his pronouncements on
Islam. This newly updated site contains extensive audio files - including

to the country-specific section, although the site holds many other listings,
including resources on law, oil and gas, and news and media. Some of the

Arab Gateway is an accessible site run by Guardian journalist Brian Whitaker.
It is simple to navigate, and content is regularly updated. There is particularly
fascinating detail about Yemen - including pages on politics, religion,
news, coffee and qat. There are useful sections on Media, News and Books
in Arabic-speaking contexts, making this a site worthy of regular visits.

Cyberspace now has a number of Fatwa sites, an interesting phenomenon discussed
in detail in Virtually Islamic and Islam in the Digital Age. I liked the
interface of this page (which forms part of the wider Islamic World site),
and the concept of selecting via a search engine an opinion from a 'choice'
of sites. There are only three listed here. Ultimately, it may be helpful
to have a search engine listing all the fatwa sites available online
(representing all 'Islamic' opinion). The site's Islamic
Search Engines may be a step in this direction.
3-D KABAH iiii
This is a 'virtual' reconstruction of the Kabah, offering a unique aerial
perspective of the precincts. Be prepared for a long download time, and
a great trip!
MUSLIM WAKEUP CALL iii
Introduced in 2003, this is a Muslim magazine describing itself as "provocative,

This site makes good use of graphics, and has fascinating content. A proportion
of the content is translated and edited from Arabic, Persian, Turkish and
other sources. There are many recipes, together with detailed guidance on
food, manners and Sufism. The Art Gallery is also worth a visit. There are
frames and no-frames versions of the site.

MENALIB is a significant information portal for Islamic and Middle Eastern
Studies. It can be occasionally frustrating to navigate, but the resource
is extremely useful for researchers, and contains online and printed materials.

Le Monde Arabe is part of a wider French language resource organised by
the Institut du Monde Arabe, Paris.
This portion of the site contains a clickable map of the 'Arab world', and

In relation to the above resource, the magazine went on-line in January
2004. It is an information-rich publication, full of beautiful images. Highly
recommended.

Well, if you got this far in the listing, you may need a break. Try this
US-based satirical site, describing itself as follows: "Islamica has grown
and established itself as the premiere outlet for style and comedy amongst
Muslims." It featured recently on MSNBC
too. Underneath the humour, some serious issues are addressed - this is
certainly an interesting way of getting audiences engaged with their communities
and religious issues.
Muslim Heritage iii
This is a very useful overview of elements of Muslim history, produced
in a user-friendly format, ideal for students and those seeking to locate
information on key Muslim personalities and developers in areas of the sciences
and the arts. The production of this site fills an important 'gap' in cyberspace.
