The Wild Bunch  More legends The Wild Bunch This was the name of the banditgang that operated from the infamous "Hole in the Wall", "Brown´s Hole" and Robber´s Roost", in Wyoming, between the years 1896-1901. They robbed banks, transports and trains. The gang seldom had more than ten members, but the members changed constantly so the total number of members is probably several hundred. The permanent leader of the gang was Butch Cassidy (Robert Leroy Parker), a former cowboy whose position was backed by the gunfighter Sundance Kid (Harry Longbaugh). In addition to these two the following members are worth mentioning: Bill Carver, Ben Kilpatrick and Kid Curry. When the means of communication improved and the resources from Union Pacific were concentrated on stopping robberies, it became more and more difficult for the gang, and they spilt up after their last train robbery in the summer of 1901. During 1901 Butch Cassidy and Sundance Kid were hunted by a hand-picked posse, consisting of lawmen and agents from Pinkerton's Detective Agency. Cassidy and Sundance Kid decided to leave the United States. They went to New York together with their friend Etta Place, and in 1902 the left on a boat for Argentina. They planned to start a ranch in Argentina but when Sundance Kid shoot a rancher they were declared outlaws and had to flee to Bolivia. Since they were outlaws they decided to go back to their former occupation. They soon became known as the "Bandidos Yankee". There are two version of how their lives ended. The first is that they were killed in San Vincente, Bolivia, by soldiers that had discovered their identity. The second version is that they made it back to the United States and lived there until the died. Which one is the true version is impossible to know, but it is most probable that they were killed in Bolivia in 1909. |
