For someone to be able to murder for so long, and soindiscriminately among his fellow human beings can only go to show thathis perception of his victims, prior to being murdered, was one ofabsolute abstraction. Kurten was able to see a person, determine if theywould be sexually stimulating (depending on the method of attack heemployed upon them). All this in the time it takes for the victim towalk towards him. And yet, Peter Kurten is the kind of man who is ableto marry, and still keep his activities a secret from his extremelytolerent wife, until he decided to confess to her. After he was calledin by the police for routine enquiries regarding the MariaBudlies/Budlick incident, realising his capture was imminent, hesuggested that his wife should turn him in to the police so that shemay claim the (now substantial) reward for the murderer, setting her upcomfortably for life.One striking feature in this case is the ability for someone so young tobe able to kill so easily (He was only 5 when he purported to havekilled two schoolboy friends whilst rafting). This could be attributedto his childhood, as his violently drunken father would often force hiswife to have sex in front of his children. Born from a family of 13children, he often mimicked his father's actions, regardless of themoral implications. Such a case occured when his father was arrested forattempting to molest his daughter. Kurten repeated the attack as he hadseen it.The seed of violence, as sown by his father actions into his mind, wasfurther nurtured by a local dog-catcher who moved in as a lodger whenhis father was in jail. He taught young Kurten how to masturbate dogs,and torture them. This led up to his early experiences with bestialitywhich he regularly practiced.One question which has remained unanswered, is his attitude to whatwould have been his final victim, Maria Budlies/Budlick. Why would hewillingly allow her to escape, knowing that she would have beenable to provide a near-perfect description of him?. What withthe current media-enhanced atmosphere in the wake of his numerousattrocities, the police were sure to act on whatever tip-off theyreceived.
